Serena Williams vs Camila Giorgi
Serena Williams needs no introduction.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion is back to another quarter-final in Wimbledon, and her presence in the grass court of the All England Club promises to be rewarding for SBOBET Tennis fans all around the world.
Williams was out for some time due to her pregnancy and even pulled out of the French Open earlier last month after suffering what she said was a pectoral muscle injury. However, she made a quick recovery and has been unstoppable since then as she continues her quest for her first post-pregnancy Slam.
Up and coming Italian tennis superstar Camila Giorgi will be determined to spoil the fun for unarguably the greatest female tennis player of all time. But does she have enough tools to make things difficult for the seven-time Wimbledon titlist?
Talking Points
Saying that Williams is in great form would be an understatement. After all, the 36-year-old American is yet to drop a set in the tournament and has never really been challenged.
Perhaps, the most difficult match that Serena had was her Round of 32 meeting with Kristina Mladenovic that saw the second set end in a tiebreak. However, as expected, Williams simply overpowered her French opponent.
Serena’s imperious form was clear as day, and that was even more evident in the last 16 against Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina. In a rare meeting between mothers, Williams bulldozed past the 29-year-old Moscow native and finished her off in just 64 minutes.
In that match with Rodina alone, Williams struck 30 winners and committed only 11 unforced errors en route to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Some would argue that Williams has not faced any stiff competition at Wimbledon—beating players ranked 105th, 135th, 62nd and 120th in the world—but that doesn’t erase the fact the American superstar is back to a Slam quarters despite returning to competitive tennis circuit just four months ago. FOUR MONTHS!
Sure enough, while there are moments Serena showed some signs of rustiness, there’s no doubt she’s back to her old, dominant self.
With that said, Giorgi is expected to have a tough time keeping up with Williams’ high-quality brand of tennis.
The 26-year-old is quick and agile and will surely look to use it to her advantage to neutralise Williams’ powerful groundstroke. Nevertheless, Serena is a master in this competition and it will take a lot from Giorgi to match-up with the American’s experience.
If anything, though, Giorgi seems confident heading into the match after implying that she doesn’t care that Williams is her next opponent.
“I don’t follow tennis, women’s tennis…but I think it’s going to be a good match,” Giorgi said when asked about what she can say about Williams’ play.
History
Williams and Giorgi have met three times before and, as if there was ever any doubt, it was the former who dominated all their previous match-ups.
Serena has not lost a set against Giorgi, though the Italian gave her quite a fight in their last meeting in the Round of 128 of the 2016 Australian Open.
Williams acknowledged the threat that her upcoming opponent brings, even praising Giorgi’s power despite her small frame.
“I played her a couple times, she has a very powerful game,” Williams said of Giorgi. “To be so small, you know, she brings so much power and energy on the court. She’s very aggressive. She does well on grass. I do follow women’s tennis. Of course I support women’s tennis. I support women’s sports. I follow so much of it. I think it’s super exciting.”
On the other hand, while Giorgi is expected to go all out, there are concerns if she can perform well at this stage. The World No.52 is playing in her first ever Grand Slam quarter-finals, so the pressure is definitely high against an opponent that won the grass event two years ago.
Prior to her Wimbledon run this year, Giorgi’s best performance is a fourth-round berth in the 2013 US Open—a tournament which, ironically, Williams won.
