There is still hope after all for Formula 1 fans out there, as there is optimism for the league committee to resume the 2020 season.
As pointed out by my SBOBET colleague, they are eyeing to continue the season two months from now in Austria as they explore various options moving forward.
Nonetheless, the rumour mill is still gaining steam as several developments have taken shape over these past few days.
For starters, Sebastian Vettel headlines our Formula 1 2020 news when he decided to leave the Prancing Horse at the end of this season, which throws his future into doubt.
On the other hand, despite his contract expiring soon, Valtteri Bottas recently expressed his utmost commitment for the Silver Arrows.
Without further ado, here is the quick roundup of our latest Formula 1 updates.
What’s next for Sebastian Vettel and for Ferrari?
Sebastian Vettel is now at a career crossroads since he is expected to part ways with Ferrari at the end of the season.
The German racer wanted a long-term deal to stay with the Scuderia. However, the latter only offered him a one-year contract with significantly lower pay.
Vettel had been Ferrari’s number one driver since 2015 when he replaced Fernando Alonso as the Spaniard negotiated an exit at the end of 2014 because he lost faith that the Prancing Horse would win the world title.
The 32-year-old driver came closest to winning it all with the team back in 2017 and 2018 when they had the much faster car. However, a couple of miscues here and there proved costly as it derailed their championship aspirations.
The emergence of Charles Leclerc last season was probably the start of a loss of confidence between the two parties. It didn’t help when Leclerc outscored his older teammate on every metric available, which includes wins, poles, points, and average qualifying pace.
Vettel’s relationship with Leclerc wasn’t at all smooth sailing, which culminated in a crash during the penultimate race last season in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
His Formula 1 2020 odds of winning this term weren’t high either especially when Ferrari had a lot of trouble during the preseason testing.
With Ferrari looking to invest heavily on Leclerc for the long term, Vettel is now headed into his final term with the team assuming the 2020 season is about to resume soon.
The German driver’s options look bleak as of this moment. A possible reunion with Red Bull is out of the question since they’ve indicated that they wouldn’t partner their star Max Verstappen with another topnotch driver.
On the other hand, Mercedes aren’t likely to pull the trigger either especially since they are inclined to stay put in retaining Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
The only possible destination that makes sense for now is for Sebastian Vettel to drive for McLaren. However, should he go to the British outfit, the German would need to accept that he won’t be competing for titles anytime soon as they are undergoing a rebuilding phase.
Valtteri Bottas hungry for a championship
After a good campaign for Mercedes last season, Valtteri Bottas is more than eager to exceed expectations in order to prove himself worthy of staying with the six-time constructor champions.
Speaking in Mercedes’ latest episode of the “Deep Dive”, the Finnish driver mentioned that he can’t wait to go back into driving for the Silver Arrows.
“Since a kid, I’ve had this target in my career to be a world champion, and obviously I still haven’t achieved it, so that keeps me going, and that keeps me motivated,” said Bottas.
“I think now within myself, how things are in my life, and also in terms of my driving, and how we are working with the team, we’ve definitely found the right path, and I really feel the improvements at the moment. That’s why I’m eager to get driving,” he added.
Last season, Bottas finished second in the Formula 1 championship race behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Since joining Mercedes in 2017, the 30-year-old driver has won seven total races.
Earlier this year, Bottas has issued a plea for Mercedes to ramp up the negotiations in order for a smoother agreement. The Finnish driver doesn’t want contract talks to drag on up to August or September since he believes that it will be a huge distraction as the season goes underway.
“It’s no secret that my contract ends at the end of this season. For sure, if you know what you’re doing for many years ahead and obviously if you’re comfortable in the team, it’s only a win-win situation,” said Bottas last February.
“If you have to drag it on for August, September, it kind of builds up and becomes more of a distraction because all of the speculation ramps up towards August and September,” he reiterated.
