Lewis Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as what betting odds predicted while teammate Nico Rosberg secured the F1 Championship title after finishing second in the race rightfully dubbed as ‘The Duel in the Desert.’
However, the one who came out as the real victor at the Yas Marina Circuit is the Mercedes team who made a one-two finish in the tournament.
Hamilton, as well as betting websites, knew that winning the championship is a long shot, especially with Rosberg still safe even if he finishes second or third. Nevertheless, the British three-time F1 World Champion didn’t give up easily and pulled off a strategy that kept online gambling enthusiasts at the edge of their seats throughout.
Hamilton controlled the race right from the start, and he made his attempt to win it all by driving slowly in the final nine laps to push Rosberg back into the pack and let the likes of Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, and Max Verstappen overtake his teammate.
Rosberg was clearly not happy about it as he requested Mercedes to instruct Hamilton to let him through. Hamilton, nonetheless, didn’t budge with his eyes still focused on getting his fourth championship.
Luckily for the 31-year-old German, he managed to keep his place by a narrow margin as the race ended with the top three finishers separated by less than one second.
Rosberg was also pressured by the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers earlier in the race, but he was able to prove that he can overtake after reclaiming the second place from Verstappen on lap 20 and holding it firm until the final lap.
The victory gave Hamilton his 10th win of the season while Rosberg bagged his first-ever World Championship title, 34 years after his father, Keke, won it.
“It’s a childhood dream come true. Thank you for everything,” Rosberg said over the radio after the race.
The Mercedes team won’t be delighted with Hamilton’s “dirty tactics,” but they might just let that pass considering the good year they had after winning the Constructors’ Championship and having their drivers dominate the tournament.
