Ghana vs Uruguay
Uruguay will look to break Ghana’s hearts once more in World Cup 2022 as they’re aiming for the final Group H ticket to the knockout stages.
Portugal became the third nation to advance following their victory over them yesterday, but La Celeste can still make it if they handle their business and certain things fall into place.
Other than getting a win against Ghana, Uruguay will be monitoring the World Cup 2022 updates regarding the other group stage match between Portugal and South Korea, hoping that the former defeats the latter on Friday.
Ghana are at second place and a win against Uruguay would see them through the next phase, and it’ll be the perfect way to get their revenge 12 years in the making.
Talking Points
Ayew and Kudus spearheading Ghana’s charge
With their backs against the wall after losing to Portugal, the Ayew brothers and Mohammed Kudus stepped up to save their World Cup campaign.
Ghana took a 2-0 lead over South Korea as Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus scored during the first half, but they were pegged back to level terms by Cho Gue-Sung – who had two stunning headers in just a span of four minutes during the second half.
But the Black Stars weren’t discouraged as they still pushed through, and their winning moment came at the 68th minute when Kudus scored the third goal to break the Taeguk Warriors’ hearts.
Kudus underlined his quality in this match and he basically gave his country a glimmer of hope, while the Ayew brothers were given plaudits for their work behind the scenes.
Pundit Michael Owen praised Jordan Ayew for his David Beckham-like performance. He was the one who assisted Mohammed Kudus in the first half with a wonderful kick, while his brother Andre was a steadying presence in the middle for the Black Stars.
These three players will need to have another fine outing against Uruguay, although they could use a goal or two from summer recruit Inaki Williams.
Uruguay have been goal-shy
Uruguay may have to unleash all three of Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez, and Edinson Cavani for this match since they haven’t scored a single goal so far this tournament.
It wasn’t because they weren’t trying as they had 21 efforts total. They just didn’t have it in their first two games against South Korea and Portugal.
For sure they wouldn’t want the distinction of being the first South American side since Peru in 1978 to go through an entire group stage without scoring a single goal.
Luis Suarez had one of the best chances for Uruguay against Portugal and he’s out to torment the Black Stars once again. On the other hand, Darwin Nunez needs to get out of his own head and do much better in this last group stage game.
History
Ghana and Uruguay meet at the World Cup for the second time ever. Well, almost every football fan knows how their previous encounter went.
These two nations went at it during the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals. Sulley Muntari and Diego Forlan scored and things got intense as both were searching for the marginal goal.
The Black Stars had their best chance to win when Luis Suarez was red carded after his handball to block their header attempt, but Asamoah Gyan – with the weight of the whole Africa on his shoulders – failed to convert on a penalty kick in the 120th minute.
Uruguay went on to win in the penalty shootout, which was a bitter pill to swallow for Ghana, even to this day.
La Celeste have never lost a World Cup game against African sides (W2, D2), while the Black Stars are aiming to win consecutive World Cup matches for the second time ever after doing so in 2006.
Betting Tip
Is this the game that Uruguay will finally break out? Well, the SBOTOP World Cup 2022 odds think so since they’re priced to win 1.77, while Ghana were installed at 4.30 and chances for a draw are at 3.70 in the 1X2 market.
Ghana’s struggles defencively in their first two games is the main reason why Uruguay will probably prevail, which is why we like going for Total Goal 2-3 @ 1.90 while Over 2.25 @ 1.78 is another bet to ponder.
Uruguay have no other option but to give everything they have for this game, and they should since their World Cup hopes are on the line. However, the sad part is that even if they win, that may not be enough.
