Chile 0-3 Paraguay
It was supposed to be another day at the office for Chile. La Roja had a great run at the Confederations Cup after making Germany, the defending World Cup winners, toil for their victory in the final. Betting odds were in their favour, and free bets for them were pouring in from all over the globe.
However, the magic and allure of football games is that you don’t know what’ll happen until the final whistle. Paraguay handed the South American giants one of their most painful defeats in recent memory.
The game started well, with Chile pounding the visiting Paraguayan defence left and right. Props have to be given to Francisco Arce and the rest of the coaching staff for preparing the squad for Chile’s powerful attacks.
However, the nightmare began for Chile in the 24th minute. Arturo Vidal accidentally cleared a free kick to the back of the net, catching Claudio Bravo off guard. The accidental goal became the perfect metaphor for the rest of Chile’s game.
La Roja upped the intensity of their attacks, but Alexis Sanchez and the rest of the attacking force failed to eke out a goal out of their possessions. Antony Silva made some impressive saves to deny them of goals.
Victor Caceres killed off any chance of Chile winning the game in the second half. A cheeky chip into the penalty box by Junior Alonso opened up Caceres for an easy strike into the goal. Claudio Bravo had a hand to it, but his efforts weren’t enough to deflect the ball.
Esteban Paredes made a perfect poach in the 70th minute to bring Chile one up, but his positioning caught him offside and invalidated the goal. Chile remained scoreless as the game died down, where Paraguay caught them in a blitzing counter. Richard Ortiz scored to end the game 3-0 for Los Guaranies La Albirroja.
This win pushes Paraguay closer to automatic qualification for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Chile’s barely keeping Argentina out of the Top Four due to goal difference. Juan Antonio Pizzi has a lot of adjustment to do when Chile face Bolivia next.
Today is a day for Paraguay, though. There will be cheering on the streets as they keep their World Cup hopes alive.
