The best of La Liga come head to head this weekend in another collection of mouth-watering football games.
The pick of the crop is Atletico against Barcelona on Sunday, where the winners will be particularly keen to see how leaders Real Madrid get on in a tough away game at Villarreal.
WEEK 24 SATURDAY:
Las Palmas vs Real Sociedad
Las Palmas and Real Sociedad open the weekend’s entertainment and the hosts will want a quick response following a Monday defeat to Malaga. Handicap betting odds have a home win at 2.67, Draw no Bet, but maybe a draw at 3.20 is the most likely outcome against fifth-placed Sociedad.
Alaves vs Valencia
Immediately after qualifying for the Copa del Rey final Alaves was thumped at home, 0-6, by Barcelona. But Mauricio Pellegrino refreshed his team sufficiently to return to winning ways against Deportivo. Three wins in six have taken Valencia seven points clear of the drop.
Real Betis vs Sevilla
On Saturday Sevilla can steal a march on their Champions League-chasing rivals with a visit to 14th-placed Real Betis. The hosts haven’t won in five while Sevilla are looking for a third consecutive win at odds of 2.04. Wissam Ben Yedder is top scoring for the visitors and Betis must hope Sevilla’s midweek exertions against Leicester take their toll.
WEEK 24 SUNDAY:
Leganes vs Deportivo la Coruna
Little Leganes will hope they can end a run of four consecutive defeats with a win, which would extend Deportivo’s own losing run to four! Neither have won in seven so this will be a nervy affair. Victory could take Leganes above the visitors; defeat could leave them in the bottom three.
Eibar vs Malaga
Eibar’s defeat to Sevilla last week ended a sequence of three consecutive wins which had propelled the hosts to seventh in the table. Malaga’s win over Las Palmas was their first in seven matches and a return to form seems likely in this one.
Espanyol vs Osasuna
After two tough games against the Reals of Madrid and Sociedad this is an ideal opportunity for Barcelona’s second club, Espanyol, to improve on its tenth place. Bottom club Osasuna are without a win in seven and while not yet ready to raise the white flag, are sinking fast.
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
Diego Simeone will have watched Barcelona being dismantled by PSG with interest, and then be pleased by his own side winning well in Leverkusen. Champions League aside, Atletico are on a nice run in La Liga, three wins matching Barca’s recent form and establishing them in fourth place.
WEEK 24 MONDAY:
Athletic Club vs Granada
19th-placed Granada have won two in three to resurrect their survival hopes, bringing the strugglers to within just two points of safety, so this isn’t such an easy game for Athletic Club, currently in eighth. Aritz Aduriz, on eight goals, is key to the Bilbao side’s European hopes.
Sporting Gijon vs Celta Vigo
Sporting Gijon, in 18th, won’t be sorry to see Osasuna’s plight, harbouring serious hopes of making its own escape, and carries an attacking threat, but will have a job keeping 12 goal Iago Aspas at bay. I can see a high scoring finish to the weekend.
Villarreal vs Real Madrid
Real midfielder Isco seems unsettled about his future, hinting heavily that he wants more playing time, but it will always be a welcome problem for Zinedine Zidane to keep all his megastars happy. Villarreal have stuttered recently in sixth but will take heart that Los Blancos has won only one in four away from home.
