Juventus 2-3 Lazio
Alessandro Murgia scored a dramatic 92nd-minute winner to give Lazio a deserved Supercoppa victory in a fantastic curtain raiser to the new Italian season.
We said Lazio would give this a go, and with a scintillating display, they surprised the football betting pundits and even some of their own fans, having won only one of the previous 24 football games between these two giants.
The Bianconeri started brightly but as the first half progressed Lazio grew into the game and began to dominate periods of play. Juve looked sloppy on the ball, but it was Lazio’s energy and pressing which put the Champions under pressure. Former Liverpool man Lucas has added an efficient cool to Lazio’s midfield.
Ciro Immobile has been in sparkling form in pre-season and that continued as he scored a double to put Lazio 2-0 up. First, Gianluigi Buffon felled Immobile on the half hour and the former Juve youngster climbed to his feet to hit the perfect penalty – low, hard and right in the corner to put Lazio one up.
Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala tried to get Juve moving in the second half, but it was that man Immobile again, rising to plant a brilliant header beyond Buffon and into the net. Max Allegri rang the changes, bringing Douglas Costa in for Juan Cuadrado and the midfielder was busy as Juventus began to pile on the pressure.
With time running out, Paulo Dybala hit an absolute beauty of a free-kick, bent around the wall, to set up a thrilling last five minutes; and when Alex Sandro was felled in the box, Dybala converted with aplomb.
Then up popped substitute Murgia to slam home the winner deep into stoppage time to send the Roman fans wild!
