But with a key qualifier against Austria in 10 days’ time, it’s no wonder the Republic of Ireland want to be as match sharp as possible.
After tackling Mexico in New Jersey, it’s back to home comforts for the Irish as they dream of upsetting the betting odds once more and qualifying for another major tournament.
Just like the Mexico clash, the visit of Uruguay to the Aviva Stadium provides Martin O’Neill with a chance to give outings to fringe players, all keen to impress.

Victory against Austria would complete a double after James McClean’s only goal in Vienna last autumn helped them on their way in Group D – they remain unbeaten and joint top at the halfway point of qualifying.
Teamwork, collective spirit and individual talent have ensured Ireland will achieve more than the sum of their parts in recent years and it’s no surprise players and fans alike now want more of the same.
McClean skippered the side in New Jersey and earned his 50th cap in the process, reaching a half century and becoming the sixth most capped player in the current squad – a great honour for the Derry man.
While Uruguay, just like Mexico, will be seen as important, it is only part of a bigger picture leading to the Austria clash.
The South Americans will also be without their main man, Luis Suarez.
