Sports betting with the Irish can be one big party

Republic of Ireland vs Uruguay

With the exception of a World Cup or European Championship year, two football games in three days are far from ideal at the start of June.

But with a key qualifier against Austria in 10 days’ time, it’s no wonder the Republic of Ireland want to be as match sharp as possible.

After tackling Mexico in New Jersey, it’s back to home comforts for the Irish as they dream of upsetting the betting odds once more and qualifying for another major tournament.

Just like the Mexico clash, the visit of Uruguay to the Aviva Stadium provides Martin O’Neill with a chance to give outings to fringe players, all keen to impress.

For they still remember last summer in France.

The memorable victory over Italy, the major scare they gave hosts and eventual beaten finalists France and the whole Euro 2016 experience when arguably the best fans in the world made it a fortnight-long party to remember.

These fringe players will now want to see if a repeat is possible next summer to secure their place on the plane representing the Emerald Isle.

Of course, O’Neill and assistant Roy Keane have to guide the nation to a place in Russia 2018 first.

Victory against Austria would complete a double after James McClean’s only goal in Vienna last autumn helped them on their way in Group D – they remain unbeaten and joint top at the halfway point of qualifying.

Teamwork, collective spirit and individual talent have ensured Ireland will achieve more than the sum of their parts in recent years and it’s no surprise players and fans alike now want more of the same.

McClean skippered the side in New Jersey and earned his 50th cap in the process, reaching a half century and becoming the sixth most capped player in the current squad – a great honour for the Derry man.

While Uruguay, just like Mexico, will be seen as important, it is only part of a bigger picture leading to the Austria clash.

The South Americans will also be without their main man, Luis Suarez.

Ireland are priced at an attractive Asian Handicap 0.00 @ 2.11.

But don’t read too much into this one.

The main event is another week away.
