These South American Teams Need a Big Win Now!

Chile vs Paraguay

This game could be the defining moment for Chile and Paraguay and neither side can afford to lose as they both aim to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Of course, this isn’t a do-or-die match, but with only four football games remaining (including this meeting) for each outfit, an ugly result could haunt the losing team when the South America qualifiers are all said and done.

Betting odds suggest that this will be an easy win for Chile – with 1X2 odds at 1.47 favouring a home win compared to the 6.40 for the visitors; however, it would be blasphemous to write off Paraguay in such a high-stake live betting affair.

Paraguay are currently eighth in the CONMEBOL standings and five points away from the automatic qualifying spots, and they know that a win here will not only give them some much-needed points but also the momentum to stage a late comeback.

They are up against the third-placed Uruguay five days later so they need all the confidence they can get to gear them well for what could be their most challenging stretch of games.

Chile, on the other hand, don’t have much room to spare either. They might be fourth right now, but they are only one point ahead of Argentina. Hence, they need all three points here to ensure that they won’t fall out of the qualifying places.

Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi has already called up Alexis Sanchez despite his recent injury, with hopes that he can spark La Roja once again just like he did in their 3-1 win over Venezuela in their last World Cup qualifier.

Stalwarts Claudio Bravo and Arturo Vidal have also been asked to report for duty to increase Chile’s chances of making it to Russia in 2018.

For Paraguay, manager Francisco Arce has kept his team relatively intact as he aims to repeat last year’s 2-1 victory over the Chileans. Though, it is concerning that they will be without scoring talisman Dario Lezcano who quit the team after he was left out of the squad that faced Brazil last March.

Games like this often bring the best from the teams involved, so I think this one will be a closely-contested affair. And although I don’t fancy the chances of Paraguay considering Chile’s depth and quality, Asian Handicap odds of +1.25 @ 1.80 make La Albirroja a tempting choice.
