Serie A: Yay or Nay at the Deadline Day

If your favourite player is yet to be announced, or if your boyhood club are yet to register that one player they’ve been haggling for in the past weeks, then I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until January, as deadline day has just passed.

All of Europe’s top leagues should have their squads finalised by now. And if there’s some deadwood remaining, well, they’ll have to sort it out when the next transfer window opens.

In Serie A, some eye-catching signings have just been completed, whilst some have broken down much to the dismay of those involved.

If you have missed any of these, fret not. This SBOTOP writer has you covered.

Victor Osimhen

Boy, oh boy, where do we begin?

The sensational striker was destined to leave Napoli, and even I was certain that he’d be playing either in the Premier League or the Saudi Pro League just before I went to bed. And now, it turns out the Nigerian international might stay put in Naples after all.

According to Serie A 2024 news, I Partenopei’s deal to send Osimhen to Al-Ahli has broken down after Napoli requested an additional €5 million from the Saudi club.

Prior to this, a deal to sign the 25-year-old forward was already set for €80 million. But because Napoli wanted some extra cash for Osimhen, it was reported that Al-Ahli pulled out of the deal and now have signed former Brentford striker Ivan Toney for £40 million instead.

Apart from Al-Ahli, Chelsea were another club that Osimhen was expected to join. However, the talks between both parties broke down as Chelsea and Osimhen’s camp were unable to agree to contract terms.

Reports have said that the London club offered Osimhen €8 million per year, which was lower than the striker’s €10 million salary in Naples.

If Napoli can’t rid themselves of Osimhen, then chances are he won’t be suiting up for them in the ongoing season. A Saudi-based outfit can still snap Osimhen up, as their deadline day is a few days later than everyone else in Europe.

Osimhen’s current deal with the 2022/23 Serie A winners will run until 2026.

Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour

It seems as if Napoli are the busiest Italian club as of late, juggling with their star striker’s dilemma and bringing in additional help for the current season.

And if Napoli fans are in limbo with how the Osimhen situation went, they could celebrate the signing of Scott McTominay from Manchester United.

McTominay, 27, was brought over with a price tag of £25.7 million. And immediately, you could see that I Partenopei faithful are delighted with the signing, as they swarm the Scotland international upon his arrival.

And rightfully so, as Napoli are getting a quality midfielder who, aside from being hard-nosed on defence, can and will score timely goals.

Manchester United fans can surely attest to these claims.

McTominay’s Scotland compatriot, Billy Gilmour, also moves in with the club in what is a reunion between the former Brighton man and Antonio Conte.

If it has escaped your mind, Gilmour played in Chelsea (albeit it was in the youth team) back when the Italian manager was with the Blues.

The deal was worth £12 million, with add-ons that could potentially be worth a further £4 million.

Tammy Abraham

The former Chelsea and Roma striker has completed a loan move to rivals AC Milan ahead of the deadline day.

Abraham, who was scintillating in his Roma debut back in 2022, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury back in 2023, which limited him to just 12 appearances in the past season.

The 26-year-old striker was crucial to Roma winning the Conference League in the tournament’s inaugural season. He’s also scored 27 times in 53 appearances in all competitions that year.

Jadon Sancho

If you read the article of one of my fellow writers, then you’ll know that the former Manchester United attacker has now joined Chelsea.

And if you are one of the Juventus supporters who were hopeful that the Old Lady would’ve been successful in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho, then I’m sorry to break your hearts.

Reports have indicated that I Bianconeri have backed out of their pursuit of Sancho for reasons involving financial commitments.

At the same time, the club want to give youngster Samuel Mbangula a chance, and signing Sancho would defeat that purpose.

Well, Mbangula has already produced a goal and two assists in his two appearances this season. Juventus are also unbeaten so far, and the club have now improved their Serie A 2024 odds of winning the title.

So off to London, Sancho goes.
