Serie A: Sassuolo Test for Scudetto-Chasing Juventus

Juventus vs Sassuolo

Juventus are set to open their Serie A 2022/23 campaign, hoping to wrestle the title from Milan and they kick off with a mouthwatering tie at home to Sassuolo.

Bianconeri head coach Max Allegri is working hard to restore the club to the summit of the Italian league, and the betting markets say he has a good chance.

It seemed a long way away last winter, but our latest Serie A 2022 betting odds have installed Juventus as favourites to win the 2022/23 Scudetto at a price of 2.39, just ahead of Inter Milan at 2.58.

AC Milan at 4.00 and Roma at 9.10 make up the top four with Napoli, after an unsettling summer, sitting just outside the Champions League places at odds of 15.00. Of course there are 38 games to play, so this all means very little to the fans until the points start rolling in.

Milan start their title defence at home to Udinese while Inter visit Lecce also on Saturday. So, by the time the Old Lady meets Alessio Dionisi’s Sassuolo on Monday, she will know how her two biggest rivals have started.

Inter won the Scudetto in 2021 and AC Milan triumphed in 2022, but is this Juventus’ year?

Talking Points

Allegri’s rebuild continues at pace

My SBOTOP writing colleague reckons, contrary to the betting odds, that it might be a tough campaign for the Old Lady.

And there is one big reason which makes Juve fans equally jittery, and it is the fact that, for the first time in 17 seasons, they will start without the reassuring presence of Giorgio Chiellini at the heart of defence. The Juve legend is embarking on a new career as a TV Pundit with Sky Italia while also playing soccer in the MLS with LA FC.

Post-Chiellini, a 4-0 stuffing at the hands of Atletico Madrid in last week’s friendly is hardly the way Juventus wanted to go into the new campaign and fans will hope the new additions to the Bianconeri squad will hit the ground running when the league action begins.

Juventus will have to deal with their new Serie A campaign without Giorgio Chiellini
Former Juventus player Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala react after the match

The return to Turin of France midfield ace Paul Pogba was the big Serie A 2022 news of the summer in Northern Italy, and Allegri has been active in the market to bring in Serbian winger Filip Kostic, centre-back Gleison Bremer, and playmaker Angel Di Maria.

All four will be big players in the coming campaign, particularly if Pogba can translate his international form to domestic football. And while the signings of Di Maria and Kostic will strengthen Juve’s attacking threat, the recruitment of Bremer is the one Juventus fans are more excited about as he comes off the back of a stellar season with Torino and was rated higher than departed Bianconeri star Matthijs de Ligt.

Allegri is still busy. He is trying to complete a swap deal to bring Atalanta’s Colombian striker Luis Muriel to Turin in place of Moise Kean. The boss is keen to provide support for Dusan Vlahovic and Muriel’s experience and agility would be a huge asset.

Juventus keen to land Raspadori

Sassuolo fans are wary of Allegri’s rebuild strategy as the Juventus boss also has his sights set on I Neroverdi’s star striker Giacomo Raspadori.

The exciting forward was one of the standout stars in Serie A last year and he has said that he wants to play in the Champions League and that has alerted all of Italy’s elite clubs. Raspadori has made 13 international appearances and, at the age of 22 has his best to come, hailed as the Azzurri’s next great striker.

He is quick with a low centre of gravity, capable of playing out wide or as a second striker, not dissimilar to ex-Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne, though the player himself has modelled his play on is hero Sergio Aguero. He’s two-footed and quick to create chances and score goals and he is already a huge asset to Sassuolo.

Raspadori plays alongside fellow Azzurri star Domenico Berardi at Sassuolo and has developed a good understanding with his teammates, and Neroverdi fans hope he will give them another year.

The club finished 11th last term and are ranked by the betting markets around mid-table. If Raspadori stays, then a top seven place is not out of the question.

TO SEE UPDATED ODDS

History

Of the 19 meetings over the last decade, Juventus have won 14, while Sassuolo have won two and there have been three draws.

The two teams met three times last season with the outcome a 2-1 result in each case. Sassuolo drew first blood in Turin in October as Maxime Lopez scored a 95th minute winner before Juventus exacted revenge in the Coppa Italia in February and then edged another 2-1 win in Sassuolo in April.

Betting Tip

At a SBOTOP price of 1.42, the Bianconeri are hot favourites to win this tie with Sassuolo out at 6.37 and the draw at 4.36.   The double chance Sassuolo or Draw is at 2.75, but I think the Old Lady will be too strong for her visitors and, for a correct scoreline, 2-0 is available at 7.33.
