Serie A: Inconsistent Inter in Danger of Dropping Down

Hellas Verona vs Inter Milan

Antonio Conte’s debut season at Inter is becoming more and more disappointing. The Nerazzurri were touted as major Serie A title contenders after bringing in the highly successful Italian coach, but they’re 11 points behind leaders Juventus after dropping more crucial points since the restart.

Inter now need a victory over Verona to avoid being overtaken for third place by a red-hot Atalanta side who are only one point behind.

The Nerazzurri have dominated Verona over the years. However, they might have their hands full this time around against the Gialloblu, who have been one of the best home sides in the league.

Talking Points

Verona’s formidable home form

Verona’s Serie A 2020 results since returning to action have been quite uneven. They’ve won two of their five matches thus far, with two defeats and one draw.

They really should have beaten Sassuolo away after going up 3-1, but they surrendered a late goal deep in stoppage time which saw them drop two points.

Verona lost 2-0 to a Napoli side that had just come off winning the Coppa Italia. But they did win their other two home matches against Cagliari and most recently against Parma.

Verona’s home form has been a major reason why they are up in eighth place in the standings. They have the fifth-best home record in the league with eight wins, three draws, and four losses in 15 matches.

That defeat to Napoli was the first time Verona had lost in their last seven matches at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi. They had won their previous four home games, which includes a stunning win over champions Juventus that defied the Serie A 2020 odds.

Verona manager Ivan Juric has crafted a solid defence for most of the season. They’ve conceded just 36 goals, the fourth-fewest in the league behind the top three of Juventus, Lazio, and Inter.

However, they have not been as secure on that end since the restart. They’ve conceded 10 goals in their last five games, including at least two in each of their last four.

Inter remain too inconsistent

Inter Milan’s once-promising season is ending on a sour note. After looking like legitimate title contenders for the first few months of the year, the wheels have come off for Antonio Conte’s side since December.

Suddenly, they lost the consistency they had in the early part of the campaign and it still hasn’t returned since the restart even with the help of a home-heavy schedule.

After beating Sampdoria in their first game back, they could only draw against Sassuolo at San Siro. To their credit, though, they showed great resilience to beat Parma away through two late goals despite being a man down.

Inter looked to be back to their best as they battered Brescia 6-0. Alexis Sanchez had his best game in ages as he scored a goal and added two assists. But then they came right back and lost again at home to Bologna 2-1 despite being a goal and a man up.

Ill-discipline has haunted Inter in recent matches; they’ve had four red cards in their last six games, which began during their Derby d’Italia defeat to Juve.

As a result, they will be without defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Danilo D’Ambrosio, who are both suspended against Verona. But Milan Skriniar, who has also been sent off recently, looks set to return to the starting XI.

Even before the break in play, though, Inter’s defence had already shown signs of underperforming. They’ve kept a clean sheet just twice in their last 13 matches, which is disappointing for a Conte-coached side.

History

Inter’s head-to-head record against Verona in recent years is as one-sided as it gets. The Nerazzurri have not lost to Verona in their 18 meetings since 1996, and have claimed 15 victories during that span. Inter have also scored at least two goals in 15 of their last 16 matches against Verona in all competitions.

Inter won their first meeting of this season 2-1 thanks to goals from Matias Vecino and Nicolo Barella. But both midfielders will be out for this match due to injury.

Betting Tip

??
Hellas Verona vs Inter Milan Over 2.50 @ 1.88
July 10, 03:45 (GMT+8)

Despite Verona’s impressive home form, SBOBET odds still have the home side as 4.00 favourites, with Inter priced at 1.84, while a draw is 3.60. While it’s tempting to go with a Verona victory, Inter are still too good to lose back-to-back matches.

For a safer-looking bet, turn your attention to the over-under, specifically the over. Although the two clubs are in the top-five in defence this season, they have slipped significantly of late, which has resulted in some high-scoring affairs.

There have been three or more goals in all of Inter’s five matches since the restart. Similarly, there have been over three goals in seven of Verona’s last eight home games.
