Chelsea vs Liverpool
It’s the clash of the weekend, well maybe even the clash of the season so far, because the Premier League top spot is up for grabs when Liverpool head for Stamford Bridge.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are the only side with a 100 percent league record after Chelsea surrendered theirs to West Ham last week. Champions Manchester City had already drawn with Wolves, and their fans have been casting a nervous eye across to Merseyside, but they’d better keep a watch on West London too.
Maurizio Sarri has made an impressive start as Blues boss, and he has already shown last night that he can beat Klopp as Chelsea left Anfield with a 1-2 Carabao Cup win.
Talking Points
What can we learn from the Carabao Cup?
The first, and most obvious thing is yet more evidence that Eden Hazard is a truly world-class talent; a player who can climb off the bench and produce a moment of individual magic to win a game, including against Liverpool. But we knew that already, the Belgian simply threw out a timely reminder as the Blues won at Anfield.
It was the first time Klopp had come up against Maurizio Sarri and the former Napoli boss now has the psychological edge, however small it may be.
Chelsea have made a habit of scoring late goals but, at 1-0 up with just over ten minutes to play, Klopp surely expected his team to see the game home.
Will Chelsea’s stunning fightback change our SBOBET predictions? Well, not for the long term, but this Sunday’s clash looks a little different now.
Liverpool, though, have looked superb this season and this may just be the nudge the players needed to stay at the top of their game.
Klopp’s teams are known for their attacking prowess, but the genial boss has added steel and serious quality to his defensive unit with Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk taking the Premier League 2018 news and headlines. And left-back Andy Robertson has been a revelation since coming in for the injured Alberto Moreno last season, playing in all Liverpool’s league games so far. The young Scot combines good timing in the tackle with pace and a wicked cross to make him a quickly improving wing-back in a goal-scoring unit.
None of those three featured in the Carabao Cup so Chelsea won’t expect an easy path through at Stamford Bridge.
The big players are already firing
Even before scoring last night’s late stunner, Hazard has already bagged five league goals. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s devastating front three have scored nine between them, with Sadio Mane leading the red charge on four.
Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah didn’t start for the Reds in the Carabao Cup, and they will be set to stretch the Chelsea defence rather more on Sunday. Daniel Sturridge scored a great goal for Liverpool, but he also missed a sitter and he is no Mo.
Furthermore, Liverpool have already shown what they can do against the top sides with a convincing win against Spurs in London, and the thing is, the Reds have three hitmen loading up whereas Hazard has either Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud alongside him. Both are fine players, but Morata is a little hit and miss while Giroud has never been prolific, though he links play brilliantly.
The Blues dropped their first points of the season against West Ham last week, and Sarri will tell his players to take the game to Liverpool while being acutely aware of the red danger on the break. Cesar Azpilicueta is a key man in the Chelsea rearguard, and consistently the best defender in the Premier League over the last three years.
History
These games are traditionally tight affairs, with two draws in the last six and the other four decided by the odd goal. Before last night, Chelsea had two 1-0 wins—the most recent being a league victory at Stamford Bridge last season, courtesy of an Olivier Giroud goal. Mo Salah was on target in a 1-1 draw at Anfield earlier in the campaign.
Chelsea vs Liverpool betting tips take some working out as there is never a clear favourite. Head-to-heads are very close at 28 to 23 in Chelsea’s favour in the Premier League era, in a period when Chelsea have been winning league titles but Liverpool hasn’t. So it’s some testament to the Reds that they have won so many.
Betting Tip
Chelsea vs Liverpool | Over 2.75 goals @ 1.88 | |
September 30, 00:30 (GMT+8) |
Liverpool are slight favourites to win at odds of 2.43, the draw is at 3.25 and Chelsea at 2.86.
After last night’s result, a draw could be tempting. But if Liverpool can edge it and exact revenge, a 1-2 triumph will pay their fans at odds of 8.50.
The matches between these two won’t decide every trophy this season, but the Reds are out of one competition already and Chelsea would love to bloody their noses again on Sunday.
It’s a perfect set up.
