The Old Gold Host Wolves: A Premier League Matchup 40 Years in the Making

The Hatters will host Wolverhampton at Kenilworth Road this Saturday for another electrifying Premier League contest! This will be the first time since the 1983-84 campaign that these clubs will meet in England’s top-flight.

Luton are looking to turn their season around and get their first win, and there’s no better way to trailblaze that journey to the top of the league table than in front of your patrons at home. The Hatters are looking to score their first league point this Saturday against the struggling Wolves.

Wolves are on the hunt for wins as well. They’re not far from where Luton is in terms of League standings and form. They had lost all but one match this season, so they should get points as much as they can, especially against weaker teams in the top-flight.

Luton Town struggle in top-flight

The newly promoted Luton Town face an early relegation threat as they have lost all of their matches this season in top-flight. The Hatters are looking to avoid becoming the latest addition to one of the shortlist teams in the history of the Premier League to lose their first five games in a season.

The Hatters have already conceded 10 goals and have only scored twice. That gives them a goal difference of -8, an evident concern early in the campaign and something they would want to work on if they wish to climb the league table.

But it seems like Luton are well aware of this issue. Manager Rob Edwards stated “We have to learn that we can’t give any gifts away. [We need to be] more compact, resilient and to defend the box very well, but [also] be more ruthless in transitional moments and, when we get the opportunity, have attempts on goal.”

Wolves on the prowl for another talented left-back?

The Old Gold, to their standards, are having an abysmal start to their Premier League campaign. They are currently 16^th in the league table with just three points to their name.

Their defence is struggling to keep opponents from scoring, as Wolves have already conceded 11 goals this season. Only Burnley have allowed more goals with 12. What is Gary O’Neil’s solution? Sign a new left-back.

According to sources, Gary O’Neil has put the Old Gold’s name in the cauldron for teams that are interested in signing Boca Juniors phenom Valentin Barco. This would be a large order for the struggling Wolves, as multiple top-flight teams, such as Man City, Chelsea, and Brighton, are also keen on signing the Argentinian wonder-boy.

It’s a little questionable for O’Neil to pursue a left-back, given that he already has a young left-back with a huge upside available for him in Rayan Ait-Nouri.

History

It will be the first time these two teams will meet each other in the top-flight since way back in the 1983-84 season, with Luton winning all their matches against Wolves in the Premier League that year.

In recent years, Wolves have had the upper hand, losing just once in five of their last six matches since 2005.

Both teams are struggling to get favourable Premier League 2023 results. Luton Town had lost all of their first four matches in Premier League this season and are currently at the bottom of the league table. They’re aiming to get their first league points against a fairly matched Wolves team this Saturday.

Wolverhampton share the same luck as Luton Town. They are currently 16^th on the league table and only a few points above the Hatters. Gary O’Neil and his team have lost all but one game this season in the Premier League.

They managed to get three points against Everton last month with a 0-1 victory in Goodison Park.

Betting Tip

There is no clear favourite to win this one, as the Premier League 2023 odds at SBOTOP have Luton to at 2.98 to win, Wolves at 2.21, and draw at 3.20. I personally agree with where these lines are priced at as these two teams are both showing lacklustre form so far this season.

My betting tip would be under 1.00 priced at 1.96 for the first-half O/U. Wolves have only netted five goals for all of their matches, while Luton have only managed to find the back of the net twice this season. These clubs struggle to score goals so there is tremendous value in Under 1.00 goals in the first-half priced at 1.96.

Another line I would recommend is First Half 1X2 Draw priced at 2.06. This goes hand in hand with the first-half under 1.00. As I stated earlier, both clubs are struggling to score at the moment. Not just that, all but one of Wolves’ goals this season came in the second-half, as Luton on the other hand, have yet to score in the first-half of their games this season.
