Newcastle United’s tough early stretch continues this Sunday, as they are now set to host Liverpool at St. James Park for their next Premier League match.

Eddie Howe’s men are eighth in the table after registering three points with a win against Aston Villa and a loss against Manchester City. Meanwhile, Liverpool have yet to lose a game so far, with a draw against Chelsea and a win against Bournemouth.

This game means more for the hosts, not only because it would put them back in the top four but also because Liverpool have been a huge thorn in their side.

Ending their losing skid against the Reds would surely give the Magpies a huge confidence boost, which may create a snowball effect (in a good way) when they face a couple of bottom-half sides after this home match.

Almiron and Pope have a score to settle

Newcastle United fans will have their eyes on Miguel Almiron and Nick Pope in particular against Liverpool for different reasons.

For Almiron, while there’s no shame in losing to Manchester City, the Paraguayan took a lot of criticism for his performance against the defending champions.

One week after their ruthless performance against Aston Villa, Newcastle United were poor in their attack against the defending champions.

Almiron later had a late replacement in wing-back Tino Livramento after making a number of peculiar mistakes that cost the Magpies the game.

As for Pope, the last time he took on Liverpool, he was given a red card because he handled the ball outside his penalty box after running forward off his line to fend off Mohamed Salah’s chance.

That red card essentially cost Newcastle United the Carabao Cup, which they lost to Manchester United in the final, because his loss meant that out-of-form Lorius Karius had to fill in.

Pope will be keen on wiping away the memory of arguably his worst day last season, so he’ll be motivated on Sunday.

Liverpool get huge Mac Allister boost

Jurgen Klopp and co. are relieved after hearing the Premier League 2023 news that Alexis Mac Allister is going to be available for selection.

The Argentine international was sent off against Bournemouth for his tackle on Ryan Christie in the 58^th minute. Mac Allister was supposed to be given a three-game ban because of it, but it was overturned by the English FA.

Both Jurgen Klopp and Andoni Iraola said that Mac Allister didn’t deserve the red card, so this was the correct move.

There’s more good news for the Reds, as Klopp declared that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz are also expected to play this weekend. Prior to the announcement, there were worries about the duo’s fitness after they hobbled off the pitch on Saturday, but both of them were seen training recently.

On the other hand, Wataru Endo could make his Reds debut this weekend. Liverpool signed the Japanese international after they missed out on their other targets, namely Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo.

The Magpies are winless in their last 13 Premier League matches against the Reds (D4, L9) since their 2-0 home win in December 2015.

And the overall head-to-heads are pretty much one-sided in favour of Liverpool, as in their 185 meetings prior to this weekend, they have won 91 games, lost 50, and drawn 44 times.

Last season, Liverpool were the only team to manage to score a league double against Newcastle United, with a 2-1 result in August and a 2-0 result in February. The Reds have never won three consecutive games at St. James Park in their league history.

Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t lost in 13 consecutive Premier League matches since losing 4-1 to Manchester City in April (W8, D5), the longest current undefeated run in the league.
