Liverpool vs Southampton
12 games in and it’s so far so good for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in their bid to win back the league title they won in 2020. And on Saturday they have a good chance to keep their momentum going when Southampton are the visitors to Anfield.
With leaders Chelsea and favourites Manchester City playing on Sunday; all eyes will be on Premier League: Liverpool vs Southampton this Saturday as the Reds bid to keep the pressure on their rivals; a win will take them above City and a point behind the Blues. Liverpool come into the game on the back of a 4-0 destruction of Arsenal while Southampton lost to bottom club Norwich City, though the Reds had a Champions League date with Porto on Wednesday night.
So the Saints have the advantage of a week off, but then the Reds are unbeaten in 15 matches at home and the Liverpool vs Southampton betting odds are squarely behind Jurgen Klopp’s team to take another vital three points on Saturday.
Talking Points
TAA is back to his best for Liverpool
On recent form, Arsenal represented a serious threat to Liverpool last week but the Merseysiders dismantled Mikel Arteta’s side with impressive ruthlessness to earn a 4-0 victory. The Red’s hot strikers were all on target as Mo Salah made it 11 for the season and Sadio Mane scored his seventh while Diogo Jota has now reached five, and substitute Takumi Minamino scored within a minute of coming on to the pitch.
After a difficult 2020/21 campaign Trent Alexander-Arnold has made six assists so far this term and looks back to his best. He put in a man-of-the-match performance as he tormented the Arsenal defence, setting up goals for Mane and Minamino. When TAA is on song Liverpool are Premier League contenders, and he just seems to be getting better and better. He scored a beauty of a free kick two weeks ago when the Reds faced West Ham but he couldn’t inspire his team to a win as the Hammers pulled off a shock 3-2 victory.
Of course, as they showed emphatically in their 3-0 victory over Everton last week, Manchester City are the team to beat and leaders Chelsea are in fine form, so third placed Liverpool can’t afford any more slip ups and they will be well primed to take on Southampton.
Saints are looking for a bounce back
A 2-1 defeat away to Norwich City was a serious blow to Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Southampton, especially after ten points from four games had fired the Saints up to mid table. Che Adams gave the Saints an early lead but Norwich hit back almost immediately and took all three points, a result which means Southampton lead a group of seven teams from 13th to 19th all separated by just six points. And that isn’t a big spread at this early stage of the season where a couple of wins can lift a team four or five places up the league table.
The loss of top striker Danny Ings, to big spending Aston Villa, in the summer transfer window has left the Saints without a proven top flight goal scorer and that could be a problem. Adams, along with fellow strikers Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong has scored two goals, and a bottom half team usually needs a 12 to 15 goal a season striker to stay out of trouble.
But Southampton’s key player is skipper James Ward Prowse who was fit enough after illness to lead his team against Norwich, and he often provides the biggest goal threat with his exceptional dead ball delivery.
History
The Saints have had a fair amount of success in this fixture; though the head to head Liverpool vs Southampton results have gone in the Reds’ favour 25 times in the Premier League era, Southampton have taken all three points on 12 occasions and they have also earned nine draws.
The last time the two sides met, goals from Mane and Thiago gave Liverpool a 2-0 home win but the Reds went down to a 1-0 defeat at St Mary’s in January.
In the two previous seasons, this Anfield fixture ended up with comfortable victories for Liverpool, by 3-0 and 4-0.
Betting Tip
Liverpool vs Southampton | Liverpool Asian Handicap -1.75 @ 1.97 | |
November 27, 23:00 (GMT+8) |
With Liverpool at SBOTOP odds of 1.25 to win I’m going to look elsewhere, but not towards Southampton at 9.40 or even the draw at 5.60. So it’s handicap betting for me and I’m backing the Reds to come through in style. For a correct score line 2-0 is the most likely outcome at odds of 6.56, but Liverpool fans will look for more than that and a 3-0 comes in at a price of 7.96.
