Premier League: Can Toffees Trip Up Tottenham?

Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton

Tottenham are still very much in the Premier League title race a quarter into the season. Spurs currently sit in third, four points back of leaders Arsenal, who dealt them their first and only defeat of the season thus far.

The Premier League 2022 betting odds will heavily back Tottenham to keep their title chase very much alive when they host Everton this weekend.

However, Frank Lampard’s men have been in much-improved form in recent weeks and should not be underestimated.

Talking Points

Tottenham getting back on track

After back-to-back disappointing results against Eintracht Frankfurt (a 0-0 draw) and Arsenal (a 3-1 defeat), Tottenham are getting back on track. They have reeled off two consecutive victories after beating Brighton – which came on the heels of the passing of fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone – and Eintracht Frankfurt (3-2).

Unsurprisingly, the prolific duo of Harry Kane Son Heung-Min provided the goals in both wins. Kane is having another fantastic campaign for Spurs with 9 goals and 2 assists in 13 appearances. Meanwhile, Son is quickly up to 5 goals this season, all of which he’s scored in his last five games.

After tweaking his formation and going to a 3-5-2 against Brighton, Spurs coach Antonio Conte returned to his preferred 3-4-3 against Frankfurt. It remains to be seen whether Conte will change it up again for the visit of Everton.

Richarlison’s Everton reunion in doubt

Richarlison may not play in the Premier League match against his old team

Richarlison will surely be raring to start against his former club. The Brazilian spent four seasons with the Toffees, scoring 53 goals in 152 total appearances, but he was sold to Spurs last summer.

However, Richarlison picked up a knee injury in their Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt, which could potentially see him miss his reunion with his old club.

But the good news for Spurs is that Dejan Kulusevski, who has missed the last couple of games due to injury, he has returned to training and looks set to return against Everton. Lucas Moura also came back from injury against Frankfurt, which should give Conte more attacking options off the bench.

Everton on the rise

Everton were on the receiving end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s 700 career club goal last weekend as they lost 2-1 to Manchester United.

That defeat ended the Toffees’ impressive unbeaten run to six games (four straight draws, two straight wins).

After being in danger of relegation last season, Frank Lampard has his side in 12th at the moment, which is a decent improvement.

Everton significantly rebuilt in their defence over the summer, bringing in veteran centre-backs Conor Coady and James Tarkowski, and it has been paying dividends. They have conceded just nine goals, tied for the fewest in the league.

Scoring goals has been Everton’s big problem thus far this season. They have just eight goals to date, tied for the fourth-fewest in the division. And to make matters worse, leading scorer Anthony Gordon (2 goals) will be suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards.

But the good news is that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is finally back fit after an extended injury absence. The 25-year-old, who is just a couple of seasons removed from scoring 16 goals in a single league campaign, made his season debut against Manchester United and will look to provide Premier League 2022 highlights once again.

History

Tottenham and Everton are two of the five clubs who have never been relegated from the Premier League, so they have met a fair number of times. 60, to be exact.

Spurs have a significant 28-9 edge over Everton in terms of wins, with 23 draws. And the north London club has absolutely dominated the blue half of Merseyside in recent years. Tottenham have lost just one of their last 19 Premier League matches against Everton, with 9 wins and 9 draws.

Tottenham demolished Everton to the tune of 5-0 in this fixture last season. Harry Kane bagged a brace, while Kulusevski and wing-back Matt Doherty both had two assists. Everton have now won just one of their last 13 visits to Spurs, with 8 defeats and 4 draws.

Bettting Tip

SBOTOP odds have Tottenham installed as significant 1.47 favourites to extend their dominance over Everton, who are priced at 6.40. A draw is 4.30.

While they have looked far from impressive of late, it’s hard to discount the fact that Spurs are still quite a strong outfit at home.

Richarlison’s potential absence will be a blow, but Kulusevski’s return, coupled with Kane and Son in fine goalscoring form, Spurs should have the weapons they need to make a strong start and get an early advantage against Everton.
