Premier League: Can the Toffees Halt Newcastle’s Stride?

Despite their many differences in form this season, an Everton vs Newcastle clash is still one of the most anticipated matchups in the Premier League. The Toffees are currently struggling to cope with the 10-point deduction they were sanctioned with. It has plagued the team, and it might be the cause of their less than inspiring Premier League 2023 results.

Meanwhile, Newcastle continue to prove themselves as one of the most inspired clubs in the English top flight. Their recent win against Manchester United propelled them to sixth place in the Premier League table, and they are well within striking distance of the top five clubs in the standings.

Due to their 10-point deduction after a breach of the financial sustainability rules, the Toffees find themselves in a sticky situation over at the Premier League, where they currently have the third-worst record in the entire table. Currently with just seven points after 14 games, Everton now are on a mission to get out of the risk of relegation.

Everton, though, have started to find some success in the past few weeks, as they’ve won three of their last five games in the Premier League. They were able to stun West Ham, leaving London Stadium with a 0-1 defeat and three league points.

So it seems like the Toffees are finding much-needed success on the road, where they also beat Crystal Palace (2-3) and Nottm Forest (0-1). But Sean Dyche would need to find some success at Goodison Park if they’d like to climb up the league table and avoid relegation.

However, the Toffees are looking like a convincing contender in the EFL Cup, where they’ve reached the quarterfinal by upsetting Aston Villa early in the tournament and dominating Burnley in the round of 16. They’re set to host the Cottagers in the EFL Cup quarterfinal later this month.

Magpies stop the Red Devil’s streak

For a time, Manchester United had the best stretch of games in the entire Premier League. Coming into their match against the Magpies, the Red Devils have won four of their last five matches in the top flight, making a surge in hopes of turning their mediocre season around.

But their momentum came to an abrupt end after their visit to St James’ Park, where they suffered a 1-0 clean sheet loss against Newcastle United. After finishing 2022–23 as the fourth-best team in the Premier League, Eddie Howe’s team picked up where they left off, as they had a strong start to their 2023–24 campaign.

Thanks to Anthony Gordon’s heroics in minute 55, the Magpies came out as the victors in what was a very competitive match against Erik Ten Hag and the rest of the Red Devils. With this win, Newcastle overtook United in the league table and are now in the sixth spot in the table, just a point shy of fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur.

With their recent success under Eddie Howe, the Magpies have become one of the Premier League’s top clubs and have become a Champions League-calibre team.

Historically, these two clubs have rivaled each other for quite some time now that they’ve had a total of 52 head-to-heads coming into their match this week.

It’s quite impressive for these rivals to equal each other after 52 outings, and that’s exactly what they did. In 52 matches, Everton have won 21, Newcastle won 20, while tallying a draw 11 times.

To make things more befuddling, they have scored a total of 148 goals against each other, with both teams scoring 74 goals each!

Both of them handle their business at home, having won most of their matchups on their respective turfs: 13 wins at Goodison Park for Everton and 14 wins at St James’ Park for the Magpies.
