Premier League: Can Eriksen’s Bees Deal Spurs Another Big Setback?

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur

Brentford are having a brilliant end to their debut season in the Premier League. The Bees, inspired by the reborn Christian Eriksen, have reeled off three wins on the bounce, including two in London derbies against Chelsea and West Ham.

Eriksen will look to inspire Brentford to their fourth win in a row when they take on his former side Tottenham Hotspur, who are still hoping to secure a top-four spot.

Spurs were handed a big setback in their quest for Champions League qualification as they lost at home to Brighton. But while the Premier League 2022 betting odds have them favoured away to Brentford, they must be careful not to get stung by Eriksen and the in-form Bees.

Talking Points

Eriksen making a big difference at Brentford

What a difference Christian Eriksen has made to Brentford. The Bees had gone on a disastrous run of Premier League 2022 results that saw them dragged into the relegation battle. But they are no longer in danger of the drop as they’ve won five of the six Premier League matches Eriksen has appeared in since arriving at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Dane has contributed a goal and two assists, including one for Pontus Jansson’s late winning goal against Watford last weekend.

Eriksen’s presence in the centre of midfield has provided the team with a much-needed spark of quality and creativity in attack. He has also helped energise their two strikers, Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo, who have been in brilliant form of late. Toney has six goals and two assists in his last six outings, while Mbeumo has a goal and four assists in his last four.

Coach Thomas Frank has switched to a 4-3-3 formation in recent matches, with super sub Yoane Wissa coming in to from a front three with Mbeumo and Toney.

Although, Frank has played with a back three for most of the season and could potentially return to that formation in order to match up better with Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 system.

Conte could make changes after Seagulls setback

Tottenham’s top-four hopes took a hit after a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton. Spurs’ front three of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, and Dejan Kulusevski, who were in such fine form heading into the match, were completely unable to create any Premier League 2022 highlights as the team failed to get a single shot on target against the Seagulls.

Arsenal’s shock 4-2 win at Chelsea has seen them go level with Spurs on 57 points, which puts the pressure back on Conte’s side.

Conte remarked after the Brighton defeat that it was a “good opportunity” for his side to learn how to cope with pressure, and he will certainly get a chance to see how they react against Brentford.

Conte has stuck with a mostly settled starting XI over the last few weeks, with only the wing-backs getting rotated. Although, Matt Doherty’s season-ending knee injury has limited Conte’s options at that position.

The loss to Brighton could potentially serve as a wake-up call for Conte to make some more changes to his side with the hope of giving them a spark.

The likes of Lucas Moura, who hasn’t started a Premier League match since mid-February, and Harry Winks both came on as substitutes against Brighton and could get a chance to start at Brentford.

History

This will be the 44th meeting all time between Brentford and Tottenham. Unsurprisingly, Spurs have a massive 24-6 edge in wins over their less renowned London rivals, with 13 draws.

Spurs ran out comfortable 2-0 winners in their first meeting of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December.

A Sergi Canos own goal gave Spurs an early lead, and Heung-Min Son struck in the second half to seal the win.

Betting Tip

SBOTOP odds have Tottenham pegged at 1.92 to beat Brentford away. The Bees are 3.85 to extend their winning streak, while a draw is similarly priced at 3.45.

This is quite a tough match to call since Brentford are in such fine form and Spurs, despite their setback against Brighton, are still a strong side.

But I’m leaning toward the Bees finding a way to hold Spurs at home. The trio of Toney, Mbeumo, and Eriksen has the potential to trouble Tottenham’s backline. Meanwhile, their ability to play a back three/five can nullify Spurs’ dangerous front three.
