Premier League: Arsenal Out to Keep Howe’s Newcastle Winless

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Newcastle United’s search for their first win of the Premier League season continues when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The last-placed Magpies valiantly claimed a point in new coach Eddie Howe’s first game in charge at home against Brentford despite his absence.

And now, they go away from home to face an Arsenal side that will be looking to bounce back after getting smashed 4-0 by Liverpool last time out.

The Premier League 2021 betting odds have the Gunners favoured to get back to winning ways at home, but Newcastle will certainly not make things easy.

Arsenal need to bounce back

Arsenal’s impressive eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League – which had seen them claim six wins and two draws – came to an emphatic end as they were smashed 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield.

It was a harsh reality check for Mikel Arteta’s men, who could not cope with Liverpool’s suffocating pressing game. Nuno Tavares, who had been in particularly impressive form of late, had a torrid time and was directly at fault for one of Liverpool’s goals.

That poor performance from the young left-back could lead to Kieran Tierney returning to the side against Newcastle. Similarly, midfielder Martin Odegaard could also get back into the starting line-up to shake up the attack after their disappointing showing at Anfield.

Arteta will also be keen to re-establish Arsenal’s strong defensive record. Prior to their drubbing at the hands of Liverpool, the Gunners had kept three clean sheets in a row in wins over Leeds, Leicester, and Watford.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was one of the few Arsenal players who acquitted themselves well at Anfield as he continued his outstanding form of late.

Arsenal have also been quite strong at the Emirates this season. Since losing their home opener against Chelsea, the Gunners have gone unbeaten in their last five league games, with four wins and a draw.

Covid-hit Howe hoping to make in-person debut

Can Eddie Howe guide Newcastle United to a win against Arsenal in their next Premier League game?

The Eddie Howe era at Newcastle began with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Brentford. The Magpies took an early lead through Jamaal Lascelles, but they twice needed to battle from a goal down to claim a point.

Howe wasn’t actually on the sidelines at St James’ Park as he was isolating after testing positive for Covid. However, the new Newcastle boss could be ready to take charge in person this weekend at the Emirates, which will be a big boost to the team.

Howe made his presence felt even though he wasn’t physically there against Brentford. It was his call to bring on Ryan Fraser – his former player at Bournemouth – who provided the assist for Allan Saint-Maximin’s equaliser.

Newcastle remain the only Premier League team left without a win this season. But the somewhat improved Premier League 2021 results they’ve had in recent weeks are at least promising. They have now had three draws in their last four games, and they’ve come from behind in each of those three draws.

Aside from Howe, Miguel Almiron could also return to the side after he was an unused substitute following his late return from the international break.

Howe will also be hoping Callum Wilson can finally snap out of his recent goalscoring slump. After scoring four goals in his first five games, Wilson has gone scoreless in his last three.

History

Arsenal have absolutely dominated Newcastle over the last decade. Since 2011, they have lost to the Geordies just once in 20 matches in all competitions. That includes seven wins in a row from 2018 to 2021.

The Gunners did the double over Newcastle, winning 3-0 at the Emirates thanks to a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace and another goal from Bukayo Saka. Aubameyang has a terrific record against Newcastle, scoring six goals in eight games.

Such has been Arsenal’s dominance at home that Newcastle’s last goal at the Emirates came all the way back in 2014 in a 4-1 defeat.

SBOTOP odds have Arsenal as big 1.43 favourites to continue their home domination of Newcastle, who are priced at 6.40 to pick up their first win of the season. Meanwhile, a draw is at 4.70.

While both clubs were involved in high-scoring affairs last time out, I don’t anticipate their matchup to feature too many goals.

Arsenal, for one, will be keen to return to their winning formula of keeping things tight at the back with their possession football. Howe, who is also famous for his heavy possession style, could try to do the same to prevent Newcastle from conceding more goals.

With home advantage coupled with superior quality, Arsenal should still come away with the win, but there are unlikely to be too many goals at the Emirates.
