Football fans have been awarded with an exciting and action-packed start to the Premier League. After 12 games, the top-five teams on the league table are only separated by three points, and with match day 13 just around the corner, the English top flight could have drastic shifts in rankings.
Many could agree that the Premier League is the most competitive football competition in the world, with a plethora of superstars, rising stars, and declining hall of famers sharing the same pitch every match day.
It is evident that the league is extremely competitive, given how close the teams are in the standings. And it’s all because of the world-class managers and the elite players. Erling Haaland – Manchester City
This man may be the most dominant footballer in the world at the moment. Not only did he lead Manchester City to complete the treble last season, he is also leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot and spearheading the Sky Blues to the top of the league table this season.
Not only are Manchester City thriving in the Premier League with Haaland as the tip of the spear, they are also dominating in the Champions League, as they stay undefeated and lead Group G with 12 points.
Haaland is firing on all cylinders, dominating in every competition he gets himself into. The only blemish on his resume is his failure to carry his national team to next summer’s Euros. But it is hard to put the blame on the 23-year-old, as he scored 17 goals in 18 games for his nation in the 2023–24 season.
Son Heung-min – Tottenham
Unlike Haaland, Son Heung-min is seeing success in the Premier League and on the international stage. Tottanham’s Son has been carrying the responsibilities for the Spurs ever since Kane left for Bayern Munich.
This season, Son has scored eight goals in the English top flight and has carried his team to the top of the league table for a considerable time. His goal conversion rate of 35 per cent ranks the highest among the top-five goal scorers in the Premier League this season.
Not only that, he and his South Korean teammates have been dominating the Asian region and have already clinched a win in the World Cup Qualifiers with a total 5-0 annihilation of Singapore.
The only thing left for Son to do is run a tight ship and carry the load for Tottenham until James Maddison and the rest of the boys return from injury. Ange Postecoglou’s club took a dip in the league standings after losing key players, and in turn, the Premier League 2023 odds for Tottenham followed suit.
Mo Salah – Liverpool
The Egyptian Messi joins this list, as he continues to shine in the English top flight by already scoring 10 goals and claiming four assists as well. His brilliance has carried Liverpool to the second spot in the league table, with only Manchester City having a better record.
Just like Son, Salah is also thriving on the international stage, as his Egypt squad tops Group A in the World Cup African qualifiers, tallying six points with a 2-0 record. Salah lit up Cairo International Stadium by scoring four goals against a helpless Djibouti squad, who inevitably dealt a 6-0 clean sheet defeat.
With performances like this on the international front and countless Premier League 2023 highlights for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah is proving to be one of the hottest commodities in the English top flight.
James Maddison – Tottenham
With a bittersweet tone, James Maddison makes the list of the most impactful players in the Premier League so far this season. Maddison and Son looked unstoppable early in the campaign, which gave Tottenham the top seed in the league table for a brief moment.
Losing Harry Kane was a tough blow to Postecoglou and the rest of the Spurs, but Maddison readily filled the void by becoming one of the most electrifying midfielders in the Premier League. In his first 11 matches this season, the 26-year-old has scored three goals and claimed five assists for his teammates.
The team’s unshakable form quickly faded when Maddison suffered a horrendous ankle injury that will keep him on the sidelines until January of next year. To add insult to injury, Maddison also withdrew from the England squad, less than 24 hours after Gareth Southgate selected the talented midfielder for the Euro 2024 qualifiers. But before Maddison sustained his injury, he averaged a higher match rating than his running mate Son Heung-min and was the best chance creator in all of the English top flight, averaging 1.48 per game. Injury aside, James Maddison belongs on this list.
