Premier League: Everton can add to Ole’s Challenge

Everton vs Manchester United

Manchester United makes the short trip up the East Lancs Road to Merseyside this weekend, for another big test for the Red Devils.

Fresh from a tough examination in the Camp Nou, Premier League Everton vs Manchester United is the first of three huge games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team; and it’s a fixture the Toffees’ fans always look forward to.

The Red Devils have had the better of Everton vs Manchester United results in the past, but there is not much to choose between these two teams at the moment, and the Old Trafford outfit knows it is in for a real game.

Talking points

Are the Toffees’ back from the beach?

Around this time of the season, the teams at the top and the bottom end often prefer to play someone in the middle, with little to play for. Does that apply to Everton?

Marco Silva’s team was on a decent run of form, winning three on the bounce without conceding a goal; and put a dent in Arsenal’s Champions League hopes the last time out at Goodison Park. But then they really threw one in last weekend when they meekly surrendered to already doomed Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Londoners bullied the Toffees throughout and played with the pace and skill we really expected from the visitors. But veteran defender Phil Jagielka admitted his team was never at the races, saying: “We just couldn’t get going. Fulham were raring to go and we couldn’t match them.

“We need to dust ourselves down now and get ready for Manchester United.”

The Everton players do have something to play for. They are in a four way race for seventh place, the ‘best of the rest’ and a potential Europa League spot. And coach Silva does have a talented squad at his disposal.

Everton will aim for a giant-kill when they face Manchester United in Premier League
Gylfi Sigurdsson celebrates with Everton coach Marco Silva after winning their match against Arsenal

21 year old striker Brazilian Richarlison has improved steadily this season, growing in maturity and hitting the levels his manager expects of him; and has benefited from the fine form of playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson. And young forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be a handful for any defence on his day.

Everton could do Manchester United a huge favour on the last day of the season when they play Tottenham Hotspur, but I doubt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will expect a warm welcome this weekend.

Three huge games for Ole

The Red Devils have been on a tricky run recently, and were lucky to beat West Ham last week thanks to two Paul Pogba penalties and some help from the woodwork and the linesman, as well as a world class save from David de Gea. The United keeper is higher up in the number of saves list than you’d expect, a top five place for the goalie is unusual for a team chasing Champions League football.

They arrive at Goodison Park on the back of a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League and must now concentrate entirely on the Premier League. Head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his team played with the right attitude in the Camp Nou and now they have three massive games to come, before two very winnable matches at the end of the season.

United finish with an away trip to Huddersfield and a home game against Cardiff City, though the Bluebirds may still be fighting for their Premier League survival. But after a trip to Goodison Park, they host Manchester City and then top four rivals Chelsea. Those two games will be another good measure of United’s progress.

Ole’s boys are sixth, but only three points behind third place and they won’t want that gap to stretch too far in the coming two weeks, starting at Everton.

Marcus Rashford is a key man for the Red Devils. He hit the bar in the opening minutes of the defeat to Barca on Tuesday and has been a constant in OGS’ team since his arrival.

History

The head-to-heads are well in favour of Manchester United with 37 wins to eight and ten draws in the last 55 games as both have been Premier League ever presents.

Everton hasn’t won in its last three clashes with the Red Devils but their visitors have lost the last four away matches in a row, and Manchester United’s four goal defeat to Barcelona was its heaviest in a two leg tie in the Champions League

Betting tip

??
Everton vs Manchester United Draw 1X2 @ 3.30
April 21, 20:30 (GMT+8)

The Red Devils are marginal favourites to win this game at odds of 2.31 with the Toffees at 2.99, and I can see the visitors ending their run of defeats, but I don’t see them overcoming Everton at Goodison Park.

I can see a high scoring draw and a result of 2-2 is available at 13.00.
