Leicester City vs Manchester United
All eyes will be on the Midlands on Sunday afternoon for the big Premier League match of the weekend when Leicester City and Manchester United battle it out for a top-four place.
There are two Champions League spots up for grabs but Chelsea, who will be at home to Wolves, can snatch one of them with a draw so this shootout at the King Power Stadium is highly likely to decide the second place.
Leicester vs Manchester United is a case of winner takes all.
Whichever team comes out on top will have saved their season, while losing would spell disaster for the other side. But each club’s motivation is slightly different.
Leicester City have spent the whole season in the top four while the Red Devils have been outside the Champions League places pretty much for the duration of their campaign.
But with one week to go, the tables have been turned and the Foxes are the team in danger of missing out as they are fifth in the Premier League table and a single point behind Chelsea and Manchester United.
To lose out now would be heart-breaking for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
They looked home and dry with an eight-point cushion when football resumed, but the Red camp would be equally dismayed to land in the Europa League.
Expectations at Old Trafford are always sky high and a good run of form put them in pole position, so to finish fifth would be a disaster for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Talking Points
Both teams stumble towards the line
Leicester City have played some of the best football outside the top two this season, and most neutrals would have expected them to have a Champions League place wrapped up by now.
But the enforced break came at a bad time for the Foxes and they have struggled to get going again since the return.
Injuries to James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, and Ricardo Pereira may not have helped but Rodgers’ had a boost this week with the return to training of Marc Albrighton, while in Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans, he has plenty of attacking threat still available.
After earning a crucial win over Sheffield United, a 3-0 defeat to Spurs came as a shock to Leicester’s system last week and they will need to find their form again quickly to avoid another disappointment.
Meanwhile, after roaring back in superb form after the enforced break, the Red Devils have begun to stutter again with a draw with West Ham, thanks to a Mason Greenwood equaliser, followed an FA Cup surrender to Chelsea and a draw with Southampton, punctuated only by a victory over Crystal Palace as part of the Eagles’ seven match losing run.
Despite the Red Devils’ unconvincing form, the Leicester vs Manchester United betting odds have them as slight favourites. But they must hope it’s Greenwood making the headlines rather than their error-prone keeperin David de Gea.
Vardy going for Gold
At the ripe old age of 33, Leicester City’s evergreen striker Jamie Vardy is within touching distance of the 2020 Golden Boot with 23 goals to his name, two ahead of the red-hot Southampton hit man Danny Ings, while Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang is one further back on 20.
The Foxes have struggled but Vardy has carried on scoring and recently became the 29th player to score 100 goals in the top flight of English football, his 103 coming at an impressive ratio of almost 1:2 in 210 games.
The forward insists his focus is entirely on the challenges to come.
“When I finish football I can look back on it and realise what it means. The season finishes and you get away for a few weeks and then you’re back in to start the next season. So it’s all about constantly going and going,” said Vardy.
History
For two teams so closely matched, the head-to-head Leicester vs Manchester United results are remarkably one-sided with the Red Devils winning 20 of the 29 games played in the Premier League era, while the Foxes have managed just two victories and seven draws.
United have won the last three games by the odd goal, but for bragging rights, the Foxes will point to their 2016 Premier League title – three years after the Red Devils last won the league.
