Three More for Messi as Brilliant Barca Race to the Top

Barcelona sit at the top of La Liga after three wins from three league football games, the latest a 5-0 drubbing of Espanyol in the Catalan derby.

And that puts them four points ahead of Real Madrid after Levante defied logic and betting odds by holding Los Blancos at the Bernabeu. It’s very early days but Barca have nudged slightly ahead of Real Madrid on betting websites as favourites to regain the title.

Barcelona 5-0 RCD Espanyol

Lionel Messi scored the 38th hat-trick of his career as Ernesto Valverde’s men swept Espanyol aside to romp to the top of the league. Messi bagged his three before the break, the first from an offside position, before Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez made late additions to Espanyol’s woe. So far so good for Barca.

Real Madrid 1-1 Levante

Levante are still unbeaten on its return to the top flight, thanks to a great point at the home of the champions. The new boys went ahead through Ivi and Real equalised before the break through Lucas Vazquez. But the visitors held out and Real’s Marcelo compounded Zinedine Zidane’s annoyance after getting a silly late red for kicking out at Jefferson Lerma.

Deportivo La Coruna 2-4 Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad join Barcelona at the top after continuing their perfect start with a 4-2 win at Deportivo. The hosts fought back to level after Sociedad had gone two up in five minutes, but Asier Illarramendi scored his second as the visitors struck twice again late in the game.

Sevilla 3-0 Eibar

Sevilla climbed to third place after beating Eibar with a second-half onslaught, after the teams went in goalless at the break. Paulo Henrique scored soon after the restart, Wissam Ben Yedder made it two and Nolito made the points safe in stoppage time.

Athletic Bilbao 2-0 Girona

Athletic Club join Sevilla on seven points after consigning newly-promoted Girona to its first defeat of the season with a goal either side of the break. Iker Muniain opened the scoring before veteran striker Aritz Aduriz doubled the lead.

Leganes 1-2 Getafe

Friday night’s match saw a first defeat of the season for Leganes, but the minnows stay fifth. Mauro Arambarri put the visitors ahead before Miguel Angel Guerrero equalised. Guerrero had a chance to put Leganes ahead but missed a penalty, and Alvaro Jiminez took advantage with the winner.

Valencia 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico were frustrated at the Mestalla as they failed to break down a stubborn Valencia defence. The draw means Atletico are on five points alongside Real Madrid. They should have seen this coming after Valencia drew last time out with Los Blancos!

Villarreal 3-1 Real Betis

The Yellow Submarine finally got its season off the ground after coming from behind to beat Real Betis at the Ceramic Stadium. Carlos Bacca scored his first goal for his new club in a much-needed win.

Celta Vigo 1-0 Alaves

And Celta too grabbed their first points of the season in a nervy affair at home to Alaves. Maxi Gomez got the only goal of the game at Balaidos, and now that’s three defeats for pointless Alaves.

Malaga 1-3 Las Palmas

In the Monday night match, Las Palmas got their season on the way with a first win away at Malaga, leaving the hosts stranded on no points. Jonathan Viera, Jonathan Calleri and ex-Chelsea star Loic Remy were on target for the visitors.
