La Liga: Shorthanded Sevilla Set for Gritty Getafe Test

Getafe vs Sevilla

After their strong start to the La Liga season, Sevilla now have their sights set on picking up a second win in a row when they take on Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Getafe did not get off to a great start to their new campaign after losing 1-0 to old coach Jose Bordalas’ Valencia, who were down to 10 men for virtually the entire match.

The La Liga 2021 betting odds will not be in Getafe’s favour against a strong Sevilla side. However, Julen Lopetegui’s side could be shorthanded once again for this match due to Covid-related absences, which gives the home side some hope of picking up a positive result.

Talking Points

Sevilla still shorthanded due to Covid

Sevilla kickstarted their new season with a fine 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. They were aided by Rayo goalkeeper Luca Zidane getting sent off after just 16 minutes.

Star striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored from the penalty spot, while new signing Erik Lamela immediately made La Liga 2021 highlights as he bagged a brace on his debut.

Lamela did not start despite Sevilla missing winger Lucas Ocampos due to injury. Suso and first-choice keeper Yassine Bounou were also out due to Covid. With all three still doubtful to return against Getafe, Lamela will likely get a spot in the starting line-up after his impressive debut.

Fellow Argentine Papu Gomez could be in line for a start while Ivan Rakitic, who also had Covid, is back in training.

However, new signing Rafa Mir looks unlikely to make his debut against Getafe. The 23-year-old, who completed his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers a few days ago, had 13 goals in 38 league matches last season on loan at Huesca and won the silver medal for Spain during the Tokyo Olympics.

Meanwhile, Marko Dmitrovic will continue to deputise in goal if Bounou remains out. The 29-year-old did not have a single save to make against Rayo, and he will be hoping for a similarly uneventful match against Getafe, who have struggled to find the way to goal in recent matches.

Getafe still missing goals

Getafe made a disappointing start to the season as they lost 1-0 to Valencia, who had gone down to 10 men after just three minutes.

Valencia went up after 11 minutes thanks to a Carlos Soler penalty. But despite controlling 73 per cent of possession and getting off 22 shots, Getafe could not find an equaliser as only four of their shots were on target. Midfielder Mauro Arambarri had a team-high seven shots, one of which hit the woodwork.

Scoring goals remains a major problem for Getafe, who had a league-worst 28 goals last season. Veteran forwards Jaime Mata and Angel Rodriguez shared the team lead with five goals apiece, but Rodriguez left this summer to Mallorca on a free transfer.

New head coach Michel, who replaces the successful Jose Bordalas, has a lot of work to do in order to order to solve this glaring weakness.

Michel will be without promising young midfielder Marc Cucurella for the rest of the month. The 23-year-old has been given a holiday after helping Spain win silver at the Olympics. The former Barcelona man was one of Gefate’s top attacking forces last season with three goals and two assists.

New signing Jakub Jankto, who had six goals in 35 appearances for Sampdoria last season, is also unlikely to make his debut.

Meanwhile, centre-back Erick Cabaco will be available to play despite getting sent off against Valencia after he had one of his yellow cards rescinded.

History

Sevilla have had the upper hand in their encounters with Getafe over the last two seasons. The Rojiblancos have won each of their last four matches by an aggregate score of 9-0.

Although, Getafe did have a lot of success against Sevilla in the past. They won four of nine previous matches, three of which coming at home, with two draws.

Betting Tip

??
Getafe vs Sevilla 1X2 Sevilla @ 2.29
August 24, 02:00 (GMT+8)

The SBOTOP odds for this match are quite competitive. Sevilla are only narrow 2.29 favourites to win away, with Getafe priced at 3.25 at home. Meanwhile, a draw is at 3.05.

Despite their weaknesses going forward, Getafe are still quite capable at the back. They can make things tough for a Sevilla side that will not have some of their key attacking weapons in Ocampos, Suso, and Rakitic. And as impressive as Lamela was in his debut, he has not been a consistent goalscorer during his career.

But still, with En-Nesyri, and Papu Gomez, Sevilla should have enough in attack to eke out an away win at Getafe.
