Alex Bergantinos struck at the heart of Barcelona’s title challenge with a 74th-minute header which handed the initiative at the top of La Liga back to Real Madrid.
And there was live betting delight for Real Madrid fans as Sergio Ramos grabbed all three points for Los Blancos with a late winner. Elsewhere, there was another surprise in Seville where little Leganes improved the betting odds on its own survival in the top division with a battling point against the title chasers.
Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 Barcelona
Luis Enrique made five changes on his side from the epic win against PSG and paid the price, as Barcelona failed to penetrate and had to equalise Joselu’s opener with a Luis Suarez effort early in the second half. But it was Deportivo delight as Bergantinos struck to lift his team eight points above the drop.
Real Madrid 2-1 Real Betis
Real Betis thought they’d won a point after leading through a Keylor Navas own goal which was equalised by Cristiano Ronaldo. A draw looked increasingly likely but Los Blancos sniffed blood when defender Cristiano Piccini was dismissed on 78 minutes, and soon enough, that man Ramos rose yet again to head the decider.
Sevilla 1-1 Leganes
Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla missed a chance to keep the pressure up, failing to beat Leganes at home and are now three points behind Barca and five behind Los Blancos. Gabriel back-heeled plucky Leganes’ opener and the visitors could have gone further ahead, but Stevan Jovetic saved Sevilla’s blushes.
Granada 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann threw himself into this one and came up trumps with a diving header on 84 minutes to keep Atletico comfortably in the top four. Mubarak Wakaso received his marching orders for a daft foul on Griezmann.
Celta Vigo 0-1 Villarreal
The Yellow Submarine is fifth and four points behind Atletico Madrid after a well-executed win at mid-table Celta. Roberto Soldado struck before half-time to keep Villarreal in the Champions League hunt.
Real Sociedad 0-2 Athletic Club
Athletic Club stay in the race for the Europa places after coming out on top of a bad-tempered match at the Estadio Anoeta. Raul Garcia struck first from the spot and Inaki Williams doubled the lead early in the second half to narrow the gap to the hosts to four points.
Osasuna 1-1 Eibar
A 72nd-minute strike from Kike Garcia looked like being enough for eighth-placed Eibar to take all three points but Osasuna’s defence was rewarded for bravely withstanding a battering when Kenan Kodro poked home the equaliser.
Espanyol 4-3 Las Palmas
Espanyol came out on the right side of a seven-goal Saturday thriller. Mauricio Lemos twice equalised for the visitors, but Espanyol pulled away with second-half goals from Pablo Piatti and Jose Manuel Jurado.
Malaga 1-2 Alaves
Malaga’s dreadful run of home form continued as Alaves plundered all three points. Zouhair Feddal scored and was sent off for the visitors while Juan Carlos bagged a goal for Malaga, but Alaves stayed in the game after Edgar Mendez fired an injury-time winner.
Valencia 1-1 Sporting Gijon
Valencia saved face rather late on after trailing to the relegation battlers who took a surprise lead through Duje Cop. It was Munir who came to Valencia’s rescue in the 85th minute. Sporting are in big trouble.
