When the Big Guns Shine in Football Games

Sports betting isn’t greatly surprised when the likes of Ronaldo, Suarez or Messi strike.

But as actions often prove, it’s what they do late on in football games which can separate the title challengers from the rest.

Another action-packed weekend in La Liga.

RCD Espanyol 0-0 Levante

A mid-table clash which frustrated the hosts.

They missed a series of chances and were further frustrated when Gerard Moreno had an 82nd-minute header ruled out.

Promoted Levante can be more than pleased with their start to the campaign.

Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Sevilla

It was always going to be a test of Sevilla’s credentials, and it was one they failed.

Their second defeat of the season means they have slipped to fifth in the table.

Mikel Vesga delivered the decisive moment two minutes before the break to end the Basque club’s run of four games without a win.

Getafe 1-2 Real Madrid

The champions could ill afford to drop more points.

Step forward the world’s best player Cristiano Ronaldo whose finish from Isco’s clever pass won the game late on.

It moved them up, temporarily, to second from fifth – the opposite direction of travel to Sevilla – and set a new La Liga record for 13 successive away victories.

Alaves 0-2 Real Sociedad

A first clean sheet of the campaign for Sociedad and, more importantly, a first triumph in four games.

Mikel Oyarzabal and Aritz Elustondo netted the goals in the final 15 minutes as Sociedad move to seventh.

Alaves remain in the bottom three.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona

The big game ended all square, although it was hard to deny the leaders Barcelona deserved the equaliser which Luis Suarez brought them eight minutes from time.

This draw may have brought the Catalans’ 100 percent record to an end, but it was a good result.

Suarez, and his provoking celebrations, cancelled out a fine opener by Saul Niguez.

Eibar 0-0 Deportivo La Coruna

There’s a bit of history in this goalless draw.

Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Uzoho marked his debut with a clean sheet as he became the youngest ever foreign goalkeeper to play in La Liga.

The 18 year-old’s saves helped the visitors to a point.

Girona 1-2 Villarreal

Two goals from Cedric Bakambu inside the opening 20 minutes fired the Yellow Submarine to victory.

It left Girona on the fringes of the bottom three.

No wonder they call him ‘Bakagol’ – he has scored seven of Villarreal’s last eight goals.

Malaga 0-2 Leganes

Leganes in the top six, who’d have thought it?

Malaga bottom. Well, after seven defeats in their opening eight games, it’s hardly surprising.

Second-half goals from Gabriel and Alexander Szymanowski won the match.

Real Betis 3-6 Valencia

What a goal fest!

A nine-goal thriller, only sealed when Simone Zaza and on-loan Manchester United man Andreas Pereira struck late on.

Betis had recovered from 4-0 down to make a game of it, but Valencia are second, even if coach Marcelino will be concerned his side nearly threw away all their work.

Las Palmas 2-5 Celta Vigo

This was five-star Vigo.

A reminder to Las Palmas that they will struggle if they continue to be on the receiving ends of defeats such as this one.

Both the hosts’ goals came in stoppage time.

Iago Aspas was the hero for Vigo who played most of the second half with 10 men.
