Newcastle United 1-1 Liverpool
Newcastle’s return to the Premier league is going pretty well so far. Now, a draw with title hopefuls Liverpool has taken the Geordies on to ten points in ninth place.
This fixture is a classic Premier League encounter which has given great entertainment over many years, with some of the best top flight football games for fanatics and neutrals.
And the Newcastle fans that enjoy their football betting will be delighted that it’s Premier League betting again after one season in the second tier. Many of them probably arrived with nerves today, wondering what Liverpool might do to them but Rafa Benitez was always going to have his side well organised against his former employers.
The visitors did dominate the first half and somehow failed to take the lead when Georginio Wijnaldum smashed his shot against the crossbar and after a scramble, Sadio Mane hit the side netting. The Liverpool stars have been criticised in recent weeks for having too many shots from distance, often ending up in Row Z. Soon enough, Philippe Coutinho showed exactly why Jurgen Klopp was so keen to keep hold of him when he curled a beauty into the top left corner to put them ahead.
But then Newcastle hit back quickly, Jonjo Shelvey hit a great ball down the middle and as Joselu chased onto it, Liverpool defender Joel Matip banged an attempted clearance onto the striker’s shin and the home fans were delighted and amazed when the ball rolled into the corner of the net.
That took the wind from Liverpool’s sales and Newcastle matched their visitors in the second half, and could have won it in injury time when Mo Diame had a glimpse of an opening but couldn’t convert.
It’s a great point for Newcastle and more frustration for Liverpool.
