Atalanta vs Fiorentina
The quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia is here and we’re in for another fun slate of matches this week with only eight teams vying for domestic silverware.
Today, the fixture between Atalanta and Fiorentina is going to be featured here at SBOTOP. Both sides are in dire need of a shot in the arm following their recent subpar showings in Serie A, and what better way to do so by inching one step closer to the Coppa Italia crown.
After two consecutive wins to kick off 2022, Atalanta are suddenly winless in their last three matches as they were outplayed by their counterparts, causing for them to slide down to fifth in the Serie A standings.
Meanwhile, Fiorentina are still reeling and trying their best to cope with the loss of their star striker Dusan Vlahovic, as the Serbian brought his talents to Juventus few weeks ago.
This will be the second time that La Dea and La Viola meet this season. And given how their first encounter went few months ago, football fans would expect some intense action between these two.
Talking Points
Misfiring Atalanta must regain their shooting touch
Atalanta are in a scoring slump. Following their hot start to 2022 where they’ve scored eight goals in their first two fixtures, La Dea have only scored once in their last three.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side were held to draws by Inter and Lazio, and that was followed up with a tough loss against relegation-threatened club Cagliari to where they were reduced to 10 men.
Injuries have played a part to Atalanta’s drought as Duvan Zapata’s fitness remains a major concern. The Colombian hitman played in their defeat against Cagliari, but he was forced to leave the pitch after just 12 minutes and his status for Thursday night is uncertain.
It doesn’t help either that Robin Gosens left Bergamo and took his talents to Inter Milan during last January transfer window, although they still have capable playmakers in Mario Pasalic and Ruslan Malinovskyi who are capable of producing Coppa Italia 2022 highlights.
Their overall quality suggests that this is just a blip on Atalanta’s part, but they must break out of it against Fiorentina.
La Dea are going to have their hands full in these next few weeks as after this Coppa Italia match against Fiorentina, they’ll take on Juventus for their next Serie A game and Olympiacos days later in the Europa League Round of 16.
No Dusan Vlahovic, big problem for Fiorentina
Fiorentina aren’t the same without Dusan Vlahovic and that was evident in their 3-0 defeat to Lazio last Sunday.
Lazio simply outclassed Fiorentina for the whole game, although they would only score their goals in the second half. La Viola eventually were reduced to 10 men as Lucas Torreira was given a red card late.
Head coach Vincenzo Italiano was visibly frustrated on the outcome, but he insisted that the fans would need to exercise patience as the club is undergoing a transition for the nth time.
But looking at their lineup, La Viola don’t offer much up front as their second leading scorers are left-back Cristiano Biraghi and an older Giacomo Bonaventura.
Youngsters Nicolas Gonzalez and Riccardo Sottil have shown glimpses that they can fill in the major void left by Dusan Vlahovic. However, both have yet to reach their full potential.
History
It has been a while since Atalanta or Fiorentina won it all here in the Coppa Italia. La Dea won their only trophy in 1963 while La Viola have six, with the latest dating back to 2001.
As far as their head-to-heads are concerned, Fiorentina have the upper hand. In their last 41 meetings, La Viola have won 17 times while La Dea only won nine times along with 15 draws.
Their last matchup took place in September where Fiorentina came away with a 2-1 win as Dusan Vlahovic gave them the lead for good when he scored a brace, while Duvan Zapata scored the consolation goal in the 65th-minute.
Betting Tip
Atalanta vs Fiorentina | Atalanta Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 2.21 | |
February 11, 01:00 (GMT+8) |
Despite losing in their most recent matchup, Atalanta are still the heavy favourites in the Coppa Italia 2022 odds. La Dea are installed at 1.69 to win, while La Viola are at 4.30 and a draw after 90 minutes is priced at 3.95 in the 1×2 market.
Fiorentina are supposed to be well-equipped to pull off an upset if they are the same team as before. However, that isn’t the case this time and they’re in for a rude awakening against Atalanta.
