Christian Eriksen Returns to Inter but Serie A Future in Doubt

After his truly unforgettable medical scare at Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen is now on the comeback trail. The Danish midfielder made his return to Inter Milan earlier this month for the first time since his cardiac arrest and is taking steps to restart his career.

However, Eriksen’s time with the reigning Serie A champions could potentially be cut short due to his current condition. That news has since sparked speculation that Eriksen could be set to return to one of his old clubs.

So read on below as SBOTOP gives you a complete update on Christian Eriksen’s condition and status at Inter.

Eriksen returns to Inter training ground

Eriksen made big Serie A 2021 news as he returned earlier this month to Inter’s training ground at Appiano Gentile for the first time since his harrowing near-death experience at the Euros.

The 29-year-old met with club directors, new coach Simone Inzaghi, team-mates and all of the staff present and was reportedly “doing well and is in excellent physical and mental shape.”

The club added in their statement that Eriksen “will now follow the recovery programme put forward by Danish doctors in Copenhagen, who will also coordinate the clinical follow-up. The Inter medical staff will naturally be kept informed and up to date throughout the process.”

Based on that report, it seems clear that Eriksen is not set to return to the pitch anytime soon. After such a serious medical incident, it is understandable that Eriksen and Inter will take every precaution in terms of attempting to resume his playing career.

Eriksen’s Italy future in doubt due to ICD

Inter could certainly have used Eriksen this season after the summer departures of Achraf Hakimi to PSG and talismanic striker Romelu Lukaku returning to Chelsea have severely hurt their Serie A 2021 odds of defending their Scudetto title.

However, there is still a major impediment to Eriksen restarting his career with Inter. That is because he will not be allowed to play in Italy because of the implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD that was inserted in his heart after his cardiac arrest. The ICD can prevent a similar incident from occurring by sending an electrical shock to restore a regular heart rhythm.

As Francesco Braconaro of the Italian Football Federation’s technical scientific committee explained, Eriksen cannot be given the go signal to play in Italy while he has that device inside him. Eriksen will have to get the defibrillator removed before there’s any possibility of him playing for Inter again.

Eriksen underwent medical examinations at Inter to see whether he can have his ICD removed and the results of those tests are still pending.

Eriksen linked with Ajax return

In the wake of the news that Eriksen’s playing future in Italy is under some doubt, reports linking him to a potential return to his former club, Ajax Amsterdam, have suddenly emerged.

Eriksen spent five successful seasons with the Dutch giants, scoring 25 goals and supplying 44 assists in 113 league appearances. He won four consecutive Eredivisie titles with Ajax before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

Ajax are coming off another title-winning campaign in the 2020-21 season as they won the league by a whopping 16 points. Ajax defender Daley Blind also plays with an ICD device, so Eriksen will not be alone in case he does make the move back to Amsterdam.

Eriksen leaving Milan could be best move for both sides

It is no secret that Inter Milan are not in the best shape financially, which is why they sold two of the stars of their Scudetto-winning side in Hakimi and Lukaku this summer.

Eriksen is also on some significant wages after his big-money move from Spurs in the winter of 2020, so while Inter are doing the responsible thing to help their player in whatever way they can during his recovery process, the Nerazzurri may not mind if they moved on from him in the near future.

If Eriksen’s ICD does force him to move away from Italy in order to continue his playing career, then it would certainly be in the best interest of both parties to part ways.

Despite his somewhat disappointing time with Inter – 4 goals in 43 Serie A appearances over two seasons – Eriksen is clearly a quality player who can help any team with his intelligence and creativity in attack. Whether it’s at Ajax or another club, there will almost certainly be suitors for his services.

But after his serious cardiac incident at the Euros, Eriksen still has a long road toward full recovery ahead of him.
