Bundesliga: Frankfurt and Stuttgart are in the Euro Dash

Eintracht Frankfurt vs VfB Stuttgart

Fourth meets 10th at the Deutsche Bank Park on Saturday when Dino Toppmoller’s Eintracht Frankfurt host Sebastian Hoeness’ VfB Stuttgart.

The Eagles are in a five-way battle for two Champions League places, level on points with Mainz in third and three ahead of RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg, with a resurgent Borussia Monchengladbach still in the hunt. Meanwhile, this Bundesliga match gives the visitors a chance to keep their Europa hopes alive as, in a congested top half of the table, they sit just five points behind Leipzig.

Frankfurt won 3-1 away at Bochum last time out, while Stuttgart lost by the odd goal in seven to title-chasing Bayer Leverkusen. With a week away for the international break, the players will be ready to get back to domestic action in a huge clash for both teams.

Talking Points

Midfielder Larsson has star quality

Eintracht have unearthed some real star quality in recent years and made a big money sale of striker Omar Marmoush to Manchester City in the January transfer window. And now, Premier League scouts are back in Frankfurt to watch the next big thing in German football. It comes in the form of 20-year-old Swedish midfielder Hugo Larsson, who has made a breakout season for both club and country.

With eight caps already for Sweden, the 6’2” box-to-box midfielder has become a key component of the Frankfurt success, making 37 appearances this season and racking up six goals and making one assist.

Larsson arrived from Malmo last season in a deal worth €9 million but, with Liverpool reported to be interested, the price tag on him has risen to €60 million thanks to his mature displays with great passing and vision. Reports in the UK have suggested that Frankfurt would consider a swap deal including Wataru Endo, who transferred from Stuttgart last year. But for now, Larsson remains a Frankfurt player.

When Eintracht hosted Bayer Leverkusen, they faced a real test of the top-four credentials, and the game turned out to be a tough lesson for the Eagles as they lost 4-1, with 13-goal Hugo Ekitike scoring the Eagles only goal. All the Frankfurt players struggled to impose themselves on that day but, against Stuttgart, it will be a different matter.

Woltemade is on Bayern’s radar

The visitors too have an in-demand young star in their ranks, as the German press has recently reported that Bayern Munich are keeping tabs on 23-year-old striker Nick Woltemade, who has hit a rich vein of form with 12 goals and three assists in 24 outings this season.

At 6’4”, he is strong in the air but has super technical ability in both feet, and Woltemade has been compared to England captain Harry Kane, the Bavarians’ current no. 9.

Kane looks likely to be the main man in Munich for another season at least, so Stuttgart have high hopes of keeping their guy for another campaign, and he links up so well with summer recruit Ermedin Demirovic, who has already bagged 10 goals for VfB in his first campaign.

Die Roten finished second in the Bundesliga last season, but this time around it has been difficult to balance European and domestic duties, and there has been speculation that the head coach may be tempted to move on with managerial issues in Dortmund. But the club recently announced that Hoeness has extended his contract to stay in Stuttgart, and that is great news for fans as well as helping the club to keep hold of its best players.

Late in February, Stuttgart attempted to halt Bayern Munich’s march to the title, and they fell short, losing 3-1. But a draw with Holstein Kiel, and a real battle with Leverkusen last week suggest they are not far away. With both Woltemade and Demirovic on target against Die Werkeslf, VfB certainly have a dangerous attack.

History

Stuttgart have edged the head-to-heads with 22 wins to 15, while there have been 13 draws in all competitions since 1992.

When the two teams met in Stuttgart earlier in the campaign, the Eagles came out on top of a five-goal thriller, as VfB’s Chris Fuhrich had a 98th-minute leveller dramatically ruled out, while Ekitike scored the opener for Frankfurt.

In fairness, neither team were in sparkling form before the international break, based on their Bundesliga 2025 results. The Eagles picked up three wins and three losses from their last six games, while VfB had just one victory, two draws, and three defeats.

Betting Tip

At a SBOTOP price of 2.38, the Bundesliga 2025 betting odds make the Eagles the marginal favourites to win this six-pointer, while VfB can be backed at 2.59, and the draw at 3.37.

Each of the Eagles and Die Roten’s last two games have yielded four goals or more and both teams have in-form strikers, so I’m backing a net-bulging afternoon in Frankfurt.
