Bundesliga: Everyone Wants Bayern Munich’s Head on the Silver Platter

Bayern Munich remain in pole position to bring home their 10th consecutive Bundesliga championship. But as things stand today, there’s still a realistic chance for them to be dethroned.

The Bavarians are on top with 55 points while rivals Borussia Dortmund are at second place with 49 and they’re the closest side to achieve the seemingly impossible, especially after the defending champions suffered a rare slip-up not too long ago.

Bayer Leverkusen hold solo third with 41 points, but the fourth and final Champions League berth is up for grabs with at least six teams in contention.

RB Leipzig – who are firing on all cylinders lately – are the ones who are at fourth due to a superior goal difference, but their 37 points is level with Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg while Koln, Mainz, and Union Berlin are within arm’s reach.

Points are for the taking once again in the 24th matchday of the Bundesliga. And here at SBOTOP, we’ll examine which matches to look out for this weekend.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are out for revenge when they’ll visit Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park for their second league meeting this season. Their reverse fixture last October ended in a 2-1 score in favour of Die Adler for their first league victory at Munich since 2000.

Leon Goretzka gave the hosts the lead but Martin Hinteregger hit back with his equaliser three minutes later. Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was tested a couple of times by Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane, but he did a superb job of keeping them at bay.

Die Adler eventually scored the winner through Filip Kostic as he fired a shot past Manuel Neuer seven minutes from time, and Trapp made another key stop to ice the game.

The Bavarians suffered a slip-up two weeks ago against VfL Bochum and they were held to a draw by RB Salzburg in the Champions League. However, they got back on the winning track against Greuther Furth with a 4-1 tally.

Expect Julian Nagelsmann to rotate his side since they have a busy schedule in these next few weeks, although they should still have enough quality to finally put away Eintracht Frankfurt.

Frankfurt, meanwhile, have lost three of their last four league games and they’re keen to end their slide.

Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg

Borussia Dortmund are still in hot pursuit for their first domestic title in a decade.

After losing to Bayer Leverkusen in their explosive encounter earlier this February, BVB bounced back with huge wins over Union Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach with an aggregate tally of 9-0.

Captain Marco Reus has played a major role in those games and he’ll be relied on to weave his magic once more especially since their top striker Erling Haaland has been touch and go because of his niggling injuries lately.

Their opponents in Augsburg are in a precarious situation. They’ve had bad Bundesliga 2022 results and they’re not favoured by the Bundesliga 2022 odds to get out of the drop zone, but an unlikely victory over BVB might give them a sliver of hope to turn things around.

Michael Gregoritsch is Augsburg’s top scoring threat with six goals, but he’ll need his other teammates to produce more for their cause.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Arminia Bielefeld

Die Werkself have been one of the most fun teams to watch this season and we expect another banger from them this weekend.

They’ll face Arminia Bielefeld in what appears to be a lopsided matchup, especially if you’ll look at what happened in their reverse fixture last October.

At the time, Bayer Leverkusen overwhelmed Arminia Bielefeld with four goals as three of their stars got the job done. Moussa Diaby started the scoring binge while Patrik Schick had a brace and Kerem Demirbay added one for good measure during added time.

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first loss in their last six and they’ll be eager to bounce back. Arminia Bielefeld are fresh from their fifth win of the season as they narrowly defeated Union Berlin 1-0 last Saturday.

Union Berlin vs Mainz

Mainz can pile more misery and avenge their earlier defeat to Union Berlin when they’ll meet anew this weekend. The 05ers have won three of their last five while Die Eisernen are losers of three straight.

Union Berlin are still struggling to cope with the shock departure of Max Kruse to VfL Wolfsburg because Urs Fischer’s side has yet to score a goal since then.

If they can’t fix their issues in the final third soon, they might as well kiss their European hopes goodbye for another term.
