Bundesliga: Bayern Continue Talks with Key Players

The upcoming SBOTOP Bundesliga season will open its doors on August 24. And with the season fast approaching, it is high time for some teams to start arranging their rosters to their liking.

After a dismal season for Bayern Munich that upset the Bundesliga 2024 odds, changes were immediately made by Die Roten’s higher-ups, which began by hiring Vincent Kompany to replace Thomas Tuchel.

With Kompany in charge, some players may fall out of favour in place of new ones. Here are those who may well be on their way or could be brought back on new deals.

Joshua Kimmich

Kimmich has been with the Bavarians since 2015, and has won everything there is to win at the highest level. A consistent and versatile player—able to play as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, right-back, or at times, centre-back—Kimmich is a staple in Bayern’s first-team lineup.

In 2020, he was part of a historic season when Die Roten achieved a rare sextuple after Bayern defeated Tigres UANL (1-0) in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup. Kimmich was that game’s man of the match.

However, last season proved tumultuous for the 29-year-old as his relationship with then coach Tuchel turned sour. Tuchel was critical of Kimmich, did not want to play him in his preferred position, and wanted to replace his spot with a new defensive midfielder.

But even with Tuchel getting the boot, new signings Michael Olise and Joao Palhinha make playing time a tough task. Add to the fact that Kimmich’s contract runs out in 2025, and Bayern may want to sell him instead of losing him for nothing in the near future.

Recent Bundesliga 2024 news, however, reported that Kimmich and Bayern could negotiate a new deal, granted that the former would take a pay cut. Kimmich is also prepared to show Kompany that he should be a starter in the midfield.

But do not be surprised if you see him wearing another team’s kit for next season.

Leon Goretzka

The former wonderkid’s career did not pan out the way a lot of people were expecting it to. Touted as one of the future’s brightest stars, Goretzka’s once bright career has since plateaued, and Bayern Munich may be looking to move on from him.

Just like Kimmich’s situation, Goretzka seems to have fallen out of favour with Bayern, as he remains one of the players the club have reportedly wanted to rid of should an offer arise.

However, recent reports have suggested that leaving Munich is far from the 29-year-old’s mind.

Same as last season, the midfielder is eager to prove that he is an integral part of the squad, and that it is not necessary for him to be sold or his contract to not be renewed.

Again, Palhinha and Olise make things a little tricky as they may be prioritised over other players who Bayern’s management see no future with.

If an attractive offer come Bayern’s way, it wouldn’t be hard for the Bundesliga giants to let Goretzka go.

Aside from his predicament with the club, his country may have also shut their doors on him as Die Mannschaft manager Julian Nagelsmann is settled on his midfield selections.

There were rumours that Goretzka may be a tough customer to deal with whenever he isn’t picked to start.

Alphonso Davies

Another player whose contract expires in 2025 is the 23-year-old left-back from Canada. But unlike others, Bayern do not want to see their young star go.

Alphonso Davies is one of the world’s finest young defenders, and Die Roten are making sure that they do right by him. Reports have circulated that the club is confident that they will be able to strike a new deal with Davies, and that there is no worry that he will be leaving the club for another European giant.

The European giant in question are Real Madrid, who have been one of Davies’ primary suitors should he decide to call it quits in Germany.

Davies’ side is keen to accept a new offer from Bayern, but only if they include a €150 million release clause.

His camp is also asking for a salary increase of €20 million from his current €11 million contract.

This may cause concern for the club as the new management under Max Eberl and Christoph Freund have budget cuts in their minds to reduce the club’s wage bill.

It is likely that they would try to negotiate with Davies to lower his demands.
