Bundesliga: Werner and Sancho Didn’t Disappoint In Thrilling Draw

Borussia Dortmund 3-3 RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig are still the leaders in the Bundesliga even after a thrilling draw against Borussia Dortmund last night.

Playing in front of the raucous crowd at the Signal Iduna Park, the hosts held a 2-0 lead and took control for majority of the first half, capped off by goals from Julian Weigl and Julian Brandt.

In the second half, however, it was a totally different story as Timo Werner dictated the tempo with his superb ball-handling and striking. He is, after all, one of the players that we should watch out for and he didn’t disappoint as he scored a brace in a span of six minutes to bring the visitors back in the game.

Jadon Sancho answered back to momentarily take the lead. However, Patrik Schick drew level once more under the last 20 minutes.

While RB Leipzig would’ve wanted to build a nice cushion with a win, they still lead by three points over the second-seeded Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga table. Dortmund, on the other hand, improved to the third spot after getting one point.

Either way, fans like me were not left disappointed in this exciting showdown. And as always, we are here to give you a run-through on what happened last night.

Highlights of the game

The match preview written by my fellow SBOBET writer indicated that this will be a tight affair based on our Bundesliga 2019 odds, and it’s safe to say that it lived up to the hype.

Both of these clubs feature two of the league’s youngest stars in Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho, and they clearly didn’t disappoint by putting out some fine performances. Other than these two stalwarts, however, several veterans have joined in the scoring party.

Ace centre-back Mats Hummels almost scored the first goal of the evening via a set piece after a header of an attempt. Good thing for the Red Bulls that Peter Gulacsi was there to parry it away.

Jadon Sancho had his turn as well at the 23rd minute when he executed a give-and-go play with his teammate inside the penalty area. However, Gulacsi was there once more with a great save.

Seconds later, Julian Weigl launched a long-range right-foot strike to catch Gulacsi off guard and he would score the first goal of the evening for BVB.

Marcel Sabitzer and Yussuf Poulsen had their share of shots in the first half. However, their attempts would either be overcooked or too far, to begin with.

Ten minutes later after the first goal, Julian Brandt let out a beautiful score to give the home team a 2-0 lead. Brandt weaved through multiple RB Leipzig defenders and capped off with a low, clinical finish.

Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki would be tested twice before ending the first half, and he passed with flying colours after two brilliant saves.

The Red Bulls came out of the dressing room playing with much more energy and aggression.

In the 47th minute, Timo Werner would net his first goal of the evening when Roman Burki’s clearance of the ball went right into Werner’s direction. Upon receiving the ball, Werner would waste no time and he flicked the ball all the way to the back of the net.

The Bundesliga leading scorer would notch his 18th goal of the season when he found himself wide open near inside the box. Werner would use his speed to blaze past Roman Burki for another easy finish. The game was drawn level to two goals apiece.

Jadon Sancho would score one of his own in the 56th minute to retake the lead for BVB. He converted off of a nice pass by Marco Reus for a cool finish. Marco Reus would try his luck after 10 minutes, but his shot grazed too far to the left.

After struggling to generate chances on the attack, the Red Bulls would finally score their third goal of the evening via a Patrik Schik score. The super-sub received an excellent pass by Nordi Mukiele and he smashed one home to draw level.

Neither team would score in the end with great defencive efforts by both clubs.

Key statistics

Timo Werner would finally score for the first time against BVB. He had faced Dortmund nine times before this game without finding the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho has become the youngest player in league history to notch at least 22 goals, at 19 years and 267 days.

Julian Weigl’s goal was just his third in 115 Bundesliga appearances, and it was his first since September last year.

RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann has yet to win at the Signal Iduna Park (D2, L3).

What’s next?

The home team will embark on a two-game road trip against Hoffenheim on Saturday and against Augsburg on December 18th.

As for RB Leipzig, they will host the likes of Augsburg and Union Berlin in a span of a week, and then they’ll fly over to the Commerzbank Arena to visit Eintracht. After that, they’ll clash against Borussia Monchengladbach in what should be a match filled with Bundesliga 2019 highlights.
