RB Leipzig have been a pleasant surprise in this Bundesliga season. They may be not as popular as their counterparts like Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund, but they’ve earned their place in the league’s upper echelon with their fine play.
The Red Bulls are currently third in the table with 50 points – trailing only by a few behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. These three clubs are expected to fight until the end in what will be a tight three-way race for the championship when the league is expected to resume a few weeks from now.
My fellow SBOBET colleague sees RB Leipzig as a perennial title contender in the Bundesliga for the foreseeable future and I agree since I’ve looked into their Bundesliga 2020 odds. But can they bring home the bacon as early as this term?
If there’s one team that can unseat Bayern Munich on the throne, it would definitely be Die Roten Bullen and I wouldn’t be surprised if they will go all-in moving forward.
Today, let’s take a look at the three main reasons as to why RB Leipzig are primed to take over the Bundesliga this campaign.
1. Julian Nagelsmann has the Midas touch
From the time he was appointed as the team boss for the Red Bulls, Julian Nagelsmann made it clear that his team will do whatever they can to compete at the highest level.
“I’m certain we’ll have a good season. We’d all be happy if we could win something in the next three years. We’d obviously have nothing against it happening sooner, but four years would also be okay. It would be great if we could achieve it. That’s our aim,” said Nagelsmann during an interview in the preseason.
And while he inherited a relatively young roster to work with, their inexperience was a non-factor given what they achieved so far this season.
They were able to secure the top spot in several matchdays back in November and they were threatening the break away from the pack at the time.
Moreover, Nagelsmann guided the Red Bulls to an auspicious start in the UEFA Champions League when they brushed aside Tottenham to move on to the Final 8.
The young German manager seems to have the golden touch everywhere he goes. Prior to joining RB Leipzig, Nagelsmann became the youngest permanent manager in league history when he took charge of Hoffenheim at age 28.
His work on the touchline for Hoffenheim is undeniable, especially when he led the U19 squad to the U19 Bundesliga title in 2014. Upon leading the senior team, Nagelsmann somehow saved them from relegation before guiding them to back-to-back top-four finishes.
With a winning pedigree like that, it is clear that Julian Nagelsmann is the right man for RB Leipzig. And so far, the players under him have responded very well under his tutelage.
2. Defence wins championships
As the old cliche goes, having a formidable defence is often the foundation upon which successful title runs are built, and RB Leipzig have excelled on that regard this term.
Die Roten Bullen have only conceded 26 goals so far. They have notched clean sheets against the likes of Union Berlin, Werder Bremen, Mainz, and Fortuna Dusseldorf, while they only conceded one goal in their matches against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach, Wolfsburg, and Bayer Leverkusen.
They have the necessary pieces at the backline with the likes of Peter Gulacsi, Lukas Klostermann, Marcel Halstenberg, Dayot Upamecano, and Ibrahima Konate. All of them are still young, athletic, and offer a whole lot of quality to go up against the best strikers out there. Just ask Robert Lewandowski.
“Leipzig have two very good centre-backs in Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate. Overall, the Bundesliga is very tight this year and it’s going to be a very interesting season,” said the Polish striker.
3. They have enough firepower to contend
Other than their strong defence, they also have shown the capability to pour in goals when needed. With Timo Werner, Yussuf Poulsen, and Marcel Sabitzer spearheading the attack, Die Roten Bullen are one of the league’s best offences by having 62 goals already this term.
Timo Werner is on course to be on his best campaign yet, having already found the back of the net 21 times along with seven assists. Because of his superb form, the 23-year-old has been sought after by multiple top clubs across Europe.
Marcel Sabitzer, Yussuf Poulsen, and even Emil Forsberg offer the much-needed versatility as well since they can score goals while creating numerous Bundesliga 2020 highlights.
RB Leipzig is one of the most complete squads here in the Bundesliga. And if they can keep up their brilliant form for the remainder of this campaign, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ll get to lift the trophy for the first time ever at season’s end.
