The Bundesliga’s second-to-last round of the season continued to provide goals and surprises all across the league.
At the top, Robert Lewandowski banged in a couple more goals for newly crowned champions Bayern Munich and broke another scoring record as a result.
Meanwhile, Erling Braut Haaland’s brace sealed second spot for Borussia Dortmund over RB Leipzig as another young starlet shone for BVB.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen’s dreams of making the Champions League took a major hit after another disappointing result.
As always, SBOBET is here to break down all the big Bundesliga 2020 results in the penultimate round of the season.
Lewandowski leads Bayern to 3-1 win over Freiburg
Robert Lewandowski had another brilliant outing for champions Bayern as he scored twice and set up Joshua Kimmich’s opener in their 3-1 victory over Freiburg.
Lewandowski is now up to 33 goals this season, breaking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record for the most goals by a non-German in a single Bundesliga season. Aubameyang scored 31 goals for Borussia Dortmund back in the 2016/17 season.
Barring a huge outburst by Timo Werner in his final game for Leipzig, Lewandowski looks set to win his fifth “Torjägerkanone,” which is awarded to the Bundesliga’s top scorer.
Lewandowski has been in blinding form for Bayern since returning to action. He’s scored in six of the seven league matches and has scored eight goals overall during that time.
Overall, Lewandowski’s tally for the season is now 48 goals in 41 games in all competitions, and he looks almost certain to break the 50-goal barrier for the first time in his career.
Bayern still have two domestic matches left as take on Wolfsburg next week in the Bundesliga finale and will face Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal final the following week.
Bayern are also still alive in the Champions League after beating Chelsea 3-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie. Lewandowski is the the Champions League’s leading scorer with 11 goals in six games.
Haaland brace seals second for Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund bounced back from their shocking 2-0 home defeat to Mainz in midweek as they won their big showdown against RB Leipzig to secure second spot in the standings.
Erling Braut Haaland bagged both goals for BVB, pushing his tally for the season to 13 goals in 14 appearances (10 starts).
Dortmund dominated the early portion of the game. Haaland got a couple of good opportunities to open the scoring, only to be denied by Leizpig keeper Peter Gulacsi.
But Haaland eventually broke the deadlock on 30 minutes with help from Dortmund’s newest wunderkind, 17-year-old American Giovanni Reyna, who was making his first career league start.
Reyna’s lovely touch set up his fellow teenager, and Haaland made no mistake to hand Reyna his first Bundesliga assist. Reyna’s role at Dortmund is likely to increase next season, especially if Jadon Sancho finally moves on.
Haaland sealed the victory with a second goal two minutes into stoppage time as Dortmund finish Bundesliga runners-up for the second season in a row.
Reyna’s strong performance in his debut start has likely earned him a spot against Hoffenheim in the season finale.
Meanwhile, Leipzig will finish off their season at Augsburg, which will be Chelsea-bound Timo Werner’s last game at the club.
Leverkusen’s Champions League hopes take a hit
The top two spots in the table may already be decided, but the other three spots below them — including the all-important two Champions League spots — are still up for grabs.
Third-placed Leipzig are only a point ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach, who are two points ahead of fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the Bundesliga 2020 odds of Leverkusen making the Champions League took a huge hit after a 2-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin this weekend.
That loss, coupled with Borussia Monchengladbach’s 3-1 win at Paderborn, sees Leverkusen two points back of Gladbach with an inferior goal difference heading into the final game of the season.
Despite young star Kai Havertz’s fine performances, Leverkusen have been too inconsistent since returning to action. They suffered heavy away defeats to Wolfsburg and Bayern and were also held to a disastrous draw against strugglers Schalke.
Leverkusen play Mainz at home in their season finale, while Gladbach host Hertha. Gladbach can overtake Leipzig for third if they win and the Red Bulls don’t against Augsburg. Meanwhile, Leverkusen need both Leipzig and Gladbach to lose in order to sneak into fourth place.
