Bundesliga: Leipzig Look to Cool Off Red-Hot Hertha

RB Leipzig vs Hertha Berlin

RB Leipzig put an end to their recent winless run in some style with a 5-0 thrashing of Mainz 05 this past weekend. Timo Werner finally got back on the scoresheet with a brilliant hat-trick as Leipzig leapt back up to third in the Bundesliga table.

However, Die Roten Bullen will have a tougher test ahead of them in midweek as they host an in-form Hertha Berlin side.

Hertha have made a great start under new manager Bruno Labbadia and will look to upset the Bundesliga 2020 betting odds in Leipzig.

Talking Points

Werner rediscovers scoring touch

Timo Werner just loves playing Mainz. The German international made Bundesliga 2020 highlights galore in their first meeting of the season as he finished with three goals and three assists to lead Leipzig to a record-breaking 8-0 win.

And in the reverse fixture this past weekend, he hits Mainz for another hat-trick to bump his tally for the season up to 24 goals, three behind league leader Robert Lewandowski.

Werner and Leipzig needed that big win. Prior to their match against Mainz, Werner had scored just once in his previous eight league appearances.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, that coincided with Leipzig’s worst stretch of the season. They won just two of those eight matches, with one defeat and five draws, including one at home against Freiburg.

Despite having so many talented attackers, not to mention a brilliant offensive coach in Julian Nagelsmann, Leipzig are still reliant on Werner to provide that extra bit of quality in the final third.

Although, Leipzig will be pleased to see Yussuf Poulsen getting back to his best. The Danish striker, who had scored just three goals this season before the break in play, has found the net in back-to-back matches and also supplied two assists against Mainz.

Poulsen’s return to form should help ease the pressure off of Werner and give Leipzig yet another dangerous weapon to throw at Hertha.

Hertha surging under new boss

The fourth time might be the charm for Hertha Berlin. “The Old Lady” are now on their fourth manager of the season with Bruno Labbadia, who has made a flying start to his stint at the capital.

Hertha got by far their most impressive away win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim in Labbadia’s debut. Then, they smashed city rivals Union Berlin 4-0 in the derby over the weekend.

Matheus Cunha is up to once again lead Hertha Berlin to victory when they face RB Leipzig in Bundesliga midweek match

Matheus Cunha has continued his excellent form for Hertha. The 20-year-old Brazilian scored in the team’s last two matches before the break in play and has found the net in each of their first two games back.

Veteran striker Vedad Ibisevic has also been brilliant, scoring in back-to-back matches after going without a goal since October.

Hertha also have Dodi Lukebakio, the team’s top scorer with six goals, as well as former AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek off the bench, so they are not short on attacking talent.

Leipzig figure to be a significantly tougher challenge for Labbadia’s side, but they should be brimming with confidence heading into the match.

Even before Labbadia’s arrival, Hertha’s away form had already been quite impressive. They have now gone unbeaten in their last six away matches, with four wins and two draws.

History

The Bundesliga history between Leipzig and Hertha is about as one-sided as it gets. The two sides have met seven times in the top division, and Leipzig have won six of them. They’ve won five of those six matches by two or more goals.

Leipzig won the last four in a row, which includes a 4-2 win for Leipzig at Berlin. Werner also starred in that match as he bagged a brace. He has scored eight goals in seven matches against Hertha.

Leipzig thrashed Hertha 5-0 in this fixture last season. Poulsen was the standout performer for the home side as he scored a hat-trick.

Betting Tip

??
RB Leipzig vs Hertha Berlina Hertha Berlin Asian Handicap +1.50 @ 1.94
May 28, 00:30 (GMT+8)

Despite Leipzig’s recent wobbles, SBOBET odds still have them priced as overwhelming 1.36 favourites on the 1X2 market. Meanwhile, Hertha remain 6.80 underdogs even after impressive back-to-back wins.

Hertha still seem to be a bit undervalued at the moment, so there’s a chance to capitalise on them, particularly on the Asian Handicap market.

With the likes of Cunha and Ibisevic in fine form, I expect Hertha to put up a tough fight against Leipzig. And even if they don’t come away with any points, I don’t see them losing by more than a goal given their current form.
