Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich Clash at the Summit

Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich

The race to this year’s Bundesliga championship is getting better and better by the day and football fans will be treated to another belter this weekend.

This will be a big matchday for most teams — including Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich — as the top spot of the table will be up for grabs.

Bayer Leverkusen are currently on top with 25 points but the defending champions are just right behind them with 24 points.

Die Werkself have been riding hot in form as they are unbeaten for more than a month, which means that momentum is on their side.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, have struggled on maintaining form and they are keen on turning things around right away.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig also have 24 points, while Borussia Dortmund are at fourth place with 22 and they too have an important fixture versus Union Berlin.

Talking Points

Bayer Leverkusen mounting a surprising run

A lot of us here at SBOTOP are surprised that Bayer Leverkusen are now on top of the Bundesliga especially since they lost Kai Havertz to Chelsea this offseason.

But Peter Bosz and his men should get a ton of credit for achieving such feat as they have been doing it by committee week in and week out.

Argentine forward Lucas Alario spearheads their attack with 10 goals and numerous Bundesliga 2020 highlights, and he is accompanied by the wing combo of Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby who have notched 13 goals and 10 assists total.

They are no slouch on the defensive end as they are the second-best team in terms of conceding goals with only 10, as youngsters Edmond Tapsoba and Jonathan Tah marshal the backline by imposing their physicality and toughness.

They are fresh from clinching the top spot in the Europa League group stages so their confidence is at an all-time high.

But first they need to defeat FC Koln tomorrow in order to maintain their momentum ahead of this upcoming match versus the defending champions.

Bayern Munich digging deep in their rotation

Bayern Munich are no longer strangers to having a grueling schedule, but their dip in form lately is a bit concerning.

One can argue that they should be on top of the standings at this point, but they have been bothered by slow starts which eventually led to too many draws.

Injuries have taken a toll on the defending champions, particularly at midfield over these past few weeks.

Joshua Kimmich is out until the start of 2021 due to a muscle injury he sustained versus Borussia Dortmund, while Leon Goretzka and Javi Martinez have been nursing knocks as well.

However, Hansi Flick has a deep rotation and he may opt to use Corentin Tolisso, Marc Roca, and Thomas Muller in the midfield while Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, and Douglas Costa will help Robert Lewandowski out front.

Niklas Sule is still not 100-per cent, which means that Jerome Boateng and David Alaba will get extended time at the back.

Alphonso Davies is expected to play again soon, but he will be thrown into the fire right away.

History

Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have been going at it in the Bundesliga for quite some time now, with the latter being dominant in the overall head-to-heads.

In their 48 matches together, the Bavarian giants have won 30 times, while Bayer Leverkusen won in nine along with nine draws.

In this year alone, Hansi Flick’s men won in two consecutive occasions against Peter Bosz’s side with identical tallies of 4-2.

When these two meet up, goals have come in bunches since neither have recorded a clean sheet over the other in more than two years.

Betting Tip

??
Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich Bayern Munich Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 1.94
December 20, 01:30 (GMT+8)

Being the champions that they are, Bayern Munich are backed by the Bundesliga 2020 odds to win in this game.

Hansi Flick’s side is priced at 1.74, while Bayer Leverkusen are pegged at 3.90 to win and a draw is at 3.75 in the 1×2 market.

With capable goalscorers from both of these top-tier clubs, goals can come in abundance here. You may also fancy going for Over 2.50 @ 2.25 or Total Goal 2-3 @ 1.96 as other alternatives.

Bayern Munich struggled at this point of the year last season due to poor personnel management which led to the firing of Niko Kovac. However, this looks more like an early season blip this time around.

So barring any unforeseen circumstances, they should get back up on their feet and remind everyone of their championship pedigree this Saturday evening.
