The Big Fight isn’t Over for Happy Honduras!

Honduras 3-2 Mexico

Honduras kept their dream of making it to Russia next year very much alive with a crucial win against live betting favourites Mexico.

The Hondurans needed everything to go in their favour in the final set of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying football games. Fortunately, they got what they wanted after the USA faltered against Trinidad and Tobago, paving the way for Los Catrachos to the intercontinental play-off.

Betting odds were tight between Honduras and leaders Mexico, who are coming off a 3-1 victory last week. However, Jorge Luis Pinto’s men clearly came out to win as they played with more motivation.

El Tri led twice in the game, but Honduras didn’t lose spirit and battled back from the deficit to stun the Mexicans.

Oribe Peralta got the game going for Juan Carlos Osorio’s side, breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute with a close-range finish from a Raul Jimenez assist.

Honduras striker Alberth Elis restored parity with a thumping header on 34 minutes, but it was cancelled out by Carlos Vela five minutes later to put Mexico ahead at halftime.

The home team, nonetheless, continued their bright start in the second half, and it didn’t take long for them to find the back of the net again.

Elis was involved in their second goal, teeing up the open Eddie Hernandez inside the box. While Hernandez’ shot hit the crossbar, it eventually bounced on Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa.

That own goal gave life back to Honduras, and they made sure to finish the job with Romell Quioto launching the winner from the top of the box at the hour. Mexico tried to find the equaliser, but Honduras held on and even had moments to extend their lead.

Honduras could have had also earned an automatic qualifying spot in the World Cup, but Panama’s late goal against Costa Rica sent the Canaleros to Russia instead. Despite that, however, they will still be satisfied with the result as their fans can continue dreaming of making it to next year’s festivities.

The fourth-place finish means that Honduras will play Australia’s Socceroos in next month’s two-legged play-off.
