The betting odds didn’t look hot when the Cleveland Cavaliers began the Finals this year’s Golden State Warriors. Nowadays, bookies are just ice-cold towards the Cavs’ chances of winning back-to-back championships.
The most painful indicator of the ditch the Cavs have dug themselves into is the latest Asian Handicap betting figures: Cleveland have a +5.00 handicap at home for 2.09. Handicapped betting odds in favour of the home teams aren’t uncommon, but seeing them on a team as strong as Cleveland is just straight-up bizarre. If we must play the blame game, I will point my fingers at the Cavaliers’ fatal love affair with the three-point line. There a shocking drop in the Cavs’ three-point productivity from Game 1 to Game 2, and Tyronn Lue wasn’t able to patch things back together in time for Game 3. The Cavaliers need to remember that trying to go toe-for-toe against the best three-point shooting team in the NBA is like asking the burglar who broke into your house to stay for a cup of tea.
I admire Cleveland’s insistence on hero ball and iso-heavy plays, but I believe the Dubs have beautifully adjusted to their game plan. The Cavs need to incorporate ball movement to their plays and get more players involved in scoring.
Finally, the Cavs need to involve Kevin Love into plays. The talented big scored only nine points and made one shot attempt. LeBron needs all the help he can get, and a red-hot Love will work wonders on the Cavs’ spacing.
There are just too many issues that the Cavaliers have to address. And we’re not even talking about the Warriors. The Warriors have their game down pat and are going to be dangerous, like always. The Land have to make the adjustments, or they will fall to the Dubs.
2016 was a great year for Cleveland, OH. However, I’m almost certain 2017 won’t be kind to them.
