Mexico 1-1 USA
Donald Trump may build a wall between the United States and Mexico, but US football found it difficult to churn out a win over the talented El Tri.
With only four qualifying football games left, the United States need all the help they can get to keep their automatic qualification berth. Betting odds were stacked against Bruce Arena’s men when they went to the heart of Mexico. Fans that bet online against the Stars and Stripes were probably livid when Michael Bradley got in the mood to score a screamer, though.
Bruce planned to stifle Mexico’s midfield rampage with his 3-4-3, and the formation worked for about the first ten minutes of the game. Chicharito was harassed out of possession by American midfielders in the sixth minute, freeing up Bradley to take an outrageous long chip to beat Guillermo Ochoa.
However, Mexico didn’t take long to equalise the score. Coming off a corner on the Mexican end of the pitch, Ochoa was quick to push the ball out for the counterattack. Real Sociedad’s Carlos Vela rushed from the right to the inside and smashed in a wonderful effort from just outside the box.
It was then a drawn-out battle from here on out. Attacks from both sides were relentless: Omar Gonzalez had a few headers that went wide, and Hector Herrera saw his free kick denied by the crossbar. Christian Pulisic attacked from the left over and over, and Bradley’s second crack at a screamer was rejected by the post. At the tail-end of the game, the United States were trying their best to contain an all-out attack from Mexico, seeing bullets sent out from various locations.
The game may have ended in a draw, but the USA are the victors out of this game. They snagged a very important point at the Azteca, the holy grounds of Mexican football. The Americans will be very confident coming to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
