World Cup 2026: A Colombian Backlash is Heading Chile’s Way

Colombia vs Chile

Second plays tenth on Tuesday when World Cup 2026 CONMEBOL: Colombia vs Chile is the entertainment on offer at the Metropolitano Roberto Melendez stadium.

Last time out Nesto Lorenzo’s Colombia suffered a surprise defeat away to Bolivia, while Ricardo Gareca watched his Chile lose 2-1 at home to Brazil. Neither coach will be happy but Lorenzo will be particularly perplexed because he is not used to seeing his team fail and the home fans will be hoping to see a reaction.

Talking points

Bolivia defeat will focus the minds

With seventh-placed Venezuela only five points behind Colombia, second in the CONMEBOL table, still have work to do to claim their ticket for the finals. They went to Bolivia unbeaten in 90 minutes under Lorenzo, since he took over in 2022. In his previous 28 matches in charge Los Cafeteros’ only defeat was the Copa America final against Argentina which went to extra time.

So what went wrong in Bolivia?

When the hosts went down to ten men on 20 minutes, after Hector Cuellar was red carded for a foul on Roger Martinez, Colombia peppered the Bolivia goal, but home keeper Guillermo Viscarra was outstanding, saving everything Los Cafeteros could throw at him. And when Miguel Terceros unleashed a second half rocket into the top corner of the Colombia net the visitors were stunned…and they never recovered. And this was no fluke from the 20 year old Terceros, who had scored in his last two internationals.

With the likes of Liverpool striker Luis Diaz and Aston Villa youngster Jhon Duran in their ranks, Colombia have some serious firepower and quick feet in attack. Liverpool are top of the Premier League and Diaz is emerging as one of the most feared forwards in the Premier League while the 20-year-old Duran is getting better by the week.

When Colombia met Argentina in September they were seeking revenge for a Copa America and, on that day, they all turned up, James Rodriguez scoring a late penalty in a 2-1 victory, and that is the type of performance Lorenzo, and the home fans, will demand on Tuesday.

Chile are hanging on

Eduardo Vargas scored in Chile's last World Cup 2026 CONMEBOL qualifiers
Chile’s Eduardo Vargas celebrates after scoring against Brazil

Four consecutive defeats have left Chile rooted to the bottom of the CONMEBOL table and all La Roja really has to play for is pride, or maybe, just about, the opportunity to progress with a strong end to the qualifiers. Chile are not totally out of contention for a play-off place but they need to turn things around quickly.

Chile failed to qualify for the last two World Cups and for such a proud football nation that is hard to take. But, while results have been poor La Roja have not rolled over for anyone and they were a little unlucky not to grab a point in their home defeat to Brazil.

Veteran striker Eduardo Vargas gave Chile the lead after two minutes, his 44th goal in his 115th international, but Igor da Cruz levelled for Brazil and Luiz Henrique scored a 90th minute winner. The Colombia vs Chile 2024 betting odds don’t give the visitors much hope of a result on Tuesday, but it’s 11 versus 11 and La Roja’s fighting display against the Selecao should give them some hope.

History

Colombia have, for many years, been a strong player in the South American football world, winning the Copa America in 2001 and they were World Cup quarter finalists in 2014.

For a nation that has not been in a World Cup finals tournament since 2014 it’s hard to fathom how Chile won back to back Copa Americas in 2015 and 2016. But big stars such as Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez are no longer in the squad and this really is a period of transition.

La Roja have edged the head-to-head Colombia vs Chile 2024 results but it has been a tight affair, with eight draws in their last 16 meetings, five wins for Chile and three for Colombia. When the two teams met in September last year they played out a goalless draw.

With three wins, one draw and two defeats from the last six games Los Cafeteros have been stronger than Chile, who have drawn two and lost six. And Colombia are strong at home; winning three and drawing one in this competition and they are unbeaten in four matches against Chile.

Betting Tip

At SBOTOP odds of 1.38 the hosts are hot favourites to pick up another three points in their quest for qualification, while Chile can be backed at 6.76 to win or 3.64 to draw.

I suspect it will be a fairly tight affair though, as the correct score line offers suggest. A 1-0 home win is priced at 4.11, a 2-0 win is 4.82 and a 2-1 win is 8.68, all happy outcomes for the hosts. But then a 1-1 Draw is priced at 7.72. I’m playing it safe and saying it will be one of those…and I hope it’s not the 1-0!
