Premier League: Jurgen Klopp’s Final Farewell

There won’t be a dry eye in the house at Anfield on Sunday when Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his goodbyes to his adoring fans on the Kop.

The Premier League match between Liverpool and Wolves will be an emotional affair as the ebullient German calls time on a glittering eight seasons as the Reds’ head coach. In that time, he has transformed the Merseysiders from a team of nearly men to a constant threat to Manchester City’s supremacy, and he has delivered a Champions League win in 2019 and a Premier League title in 2020 with a club record of 99 league points.

But the 2019 and 2020 FIFA Coach of the Year announced in January that he would be stepping down at the end of the campaign, saying he could not keep doing the job, ’again and again and again and again.’ And he leaves having delivered another trophy, the 2024 Carabao Cup.        

The last question remaining is can the honorary Scouse sign off with a victory?

Well, the pre-match Premier League 2024 betting odds say he can, and he will see one more of Jurgen Klopp’s famous celebrations in front of the Kop.

Robertson set to return for Liverpool

In a dramatic last week of the Premier League campaign, the Reds faithful would dearly love to see a win over Wolves after watching their team play out a dramatic 3-3 draw with Aston Villa on Monday night. That point took Liverpool to 79, and the 80-point mark has been base camp in recent seasons, so Klopp will be determined to end with a bang.    

Andy Robertson missed Liverpool’s match with the Villains due to a minor fitness issue, but he has been in full training and looks set to return for the match against the Wolves.

The Scotland skipper has been a huge part of Liverpool’s success in Klopp’s reign, and it is fitting that he will be there when his boss says his farewells. On the pitch, he has been one of the best attacking wing-backs in world football, and the Reds are always a better team with Robertson in the XI.

Another star sure to play is talisman Mohamed Salah, and it is possible this will be the Egyptian hitman’s swansong too. He was the subject of a huge bid from the Saudi Pro League last year, and Salah may well see Klopp’s departure as a reason for him to make a change.   

With Feyenoord boss Arne Slot favourite to take over at Anfield, the club will look a little different. But with third place confirmed, there will be Champions League football back on the Liverpool calendar.     

 

Neto 50-per cent for Wolves

In amongst all the noise and emotion at Anfield, Wolves boss Gary O’ Neil has a job to do on Sunday. He has worked wonders at Molineux this season, and his team currently sits 13^th in the league table and just two points behind Brighton in 10th.   

Wolves come into the game on the back of two poor Premier League 2024 results, a 5-1 hammering by Manchester City and a 3-1 home reversal to Crystal Palace.

Star winger Pedro Neto missed the matches against City and the Eagles, and he has suffered from hamstring troubles this season, but the 24-year-old has still been Wolves best player. He is in full training, and Neto has a good chance of playing some part against Liverpool on Saturday.

With the summer transfer window not far away, O’Neil is keen to keep hold of his prize asset. The Wolves boss says, despite interest from bigger clubs, that Neto is not intent on a move away from Molinuex, and he is a big part of the club’s plans.

But money talks and there is a long summer ahead.    

 

History

With 16 wins to four the Reds have dominated the head-to-heads, and the Midlanders have failed to win at Anfield on their last six visits. The return match resulted in a 3-1 victory for Liverpool with Robertson on target in a second half comeback.

In terms of recent form, the hosts are well in front too, with three wins, two draws, and a single defeat from the last six games, while Wolves have won one, drawn one, and lost four.

Add to that Liverpool’s home record of 14 wins, three draws, and one defeat, and the fact that Wolves are winless in their last five games on the road, and we’re looking at another three points for Klopp.   

 

Betting Tip

With Liverpool at SBOTOP odds of 1.15, Wolves priced 9.64, and the draw at 6.76, we expect this to be a celebration for Liverpool and not just a sad goodbye.

I expect Liverpool to win comfortably in the end, but they may have to be patient. And for a correct scoreline, I’d go for 2-0 at odds of 8.68 or 3-0 at 8.10.
