Colombia and Jamaica are set to square off in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in a matchup that only a few saw coming.
Before the first group stage matchday, the best-case scenario for Colombia was to finish second in Group H, while Jamaica were considered lucky to not be at the bottom of Group F. But they have outdone themselves with their positive Women’s World Cup 2023 results.
Las Cafeteras finished first in Group H with Morocco in second, while the Reggae Girlz eliminated Brazil during the final group stage matchday.
Both of these nations truly earned their places in the knockout phase. However, only one of them can advance to the next round this Tuesday.

Colombia are a force to be reckoned with
Two wins are what Colombia needed to advance, and that’s what they did in their first two group stage matches. Las Cafeteras beat South Korea 2-0, which was followed by a 2-1 upset victory over Group H favourites Germany.
Colombia did lose 1-0 to Morocco in the final group stage game, but they still managed to advance, and it helped that Germany fell out of the competition when they were held to a 1-1 draw against South Korea.

Catalina Usme is showing everyone that she still has more in the tank, as she scored a goal against South Korea. This may be her final Women’s World Cup because she just turned 33 this year, so she’ll look to make the most of it.
Leicy Santos has yet to leave her imprint on this tournament, but she remains a dangerous customer for the opposition. She has a habit of making history, after all, becoming the first Colombian ever to be bought by a European team and score in the Champions League.
Jamaica’s feel-good story
Despite qualifying for the Women’s World Cup, the Jamaican government apparently hasn’t provided enough support for the Reggae Girlz. In fact, they needed to set up a GoFundMe account to raise funds for the team to take care of their flights, lodging, etc.
The $45,000 that was raised was worth it because they’re now here in the Round of 16, and Jamaica did it with a sturdy backline.
Jamaica held its own against the misfiring France, and then they beat lowly Panama 1-0. The Reggae Girlz only needed a draw to eliminate Brazil, and they did, holding them to a goalless draw.
Defence can only take you so far, so this is the perfect time for Khadija “Bunny” Shaw to show up for Jamaica. Shaw is Jamaica’s all-time leading scorer with 55 goals, and she’ll be the driving force against Colombia.
History
These two nations are only going to meet for the third time ever. Prior to Tuesday, Colombia and Jamaica had one victory apiece.
Their first-ever encounter was at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, where Jamaica defeated Colombia 2-1 in the group stage.
However, one year later, Las Cafeteras got their revenge against the Reggae Girlz in the Pan American Games group stage, beating them with a 2-0 scoreline.
Colombia are in the Women’s World Cup knockout phase for only the second time in their history, while Jamaica are here for the first time.
In the 2015 edition of the Women’s World Cup, Colombia finished third behind France and England in Group F to progress to the Round of 16, but they were eliminated right away by USA, who went on to win their third title at the time.
