Premier League: Who are the Unsung Attacking Stars?

Some on this list may surprise you.

Equally, when I looked at my selections, some of the stats surprised me.

Yet in many ways, that simply justifies the place of this “fab four” in my list of unsung attacking players in the Premier League.

They have all produced Premier League 2022 highlights and, with a little more support and better fortune on the injury front, could be set to play an even more pivotal role in 2022-23.

The SBOTOP Premier League 2022 betting odds may not back any of their respective clubs as title contenders but these players can shine with the best of them even if they often go under the radar.

Harvey Barnes (Leicester City)

Barnes has risen through the ranks in the top-flight and shown his promise in a variety of ways in the last two years.

From late goals to important assists, the 24 year-old attacking midfielder and winger has shone and become an integral man for the Foxes when fit.

10 goals and six assists in 31 appearances last term was preceded by nine goals and four assists in 25 league matches the previous season.

In short then, when selected, he performs very well particularly as a starter.

Expect more from him next term.

Michail Antonio (West Ham)

When West Ham paid a relatively modest £7-M for Antonio in 2015, no one would have expected him to be hailed as the club’s record Premier League goalscorer a few years later.

For a start, Antonio spent most of his early days at West Ham playing on the right – occasionally even at right-back.

However, his contribution to the East Londoners has been immense and is rightly recognised, especially since last August when he surpassed fan-favourite Paolo Di Canio in the Premier League goalscoring charts.

It has been quite a decade for Antonio who, since 2008, had a series of loan moves playing for Cheltenham Town, Southampton, and Colchester United.

As he gained experience, he also gained a reputation in the game for being a utility player.

Then in 2010, Antonio broke into the Reading first team before being shipped out to Sheffield Wednesday, first on loan and then permanently.

It was at Wednesday where Antonio began to show his forward prowess. He took over the right-wing role and would go on to score 18 goals in 84 appearances.

After strong displays, he was touted by then promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest where his form continued, and it wasn’t long before the Premier League came.

He is now an accomplished and key part of the Hammers progress and, with more support up front, could fire them to greater heights.

Callum Wilson (Newcastle)

Watch Wilson go next season.

A product of the Coventry City academy, he spent five years with the Sky Blues, including two seasons on loan with Kettering Town and Tamworth.

When he was named Coventry City’s Player of the Year in 2013-14, scoring 21 goals in 37 appearances, he was duly signed by Bournemouth and made an instant impact. In his first season, he scored 20 Championship goals, helping the Cherries earn promotion to the Premier League for the very first time.

An ACL rupture in his right knee marred his first two campaigns in the Premier League. Wilson was more involved in the next three seasons when he netted 41 goals in 126 Premier League games.

With the Cherries getting relegated at the end of 2019-20, Wilson was signed by Newcastle United. He responded by scoring 12 goals in 26 appearances and assisting five.

Eight goals in 18 matches followed last term, missing most of the second half of the campaign after picking up an unfortunate injury at Christmas.

The fact he has now returned to a side on the up and now with new-found wealth, it suggests big things lie ahead.

Certainly, goalscoring comes very naturally to Wilson. So, with fewer injuries and more game time, he has the potential to offer a lot more in the Premier League.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)

Claims that Bowen is still underrated shrink by the minute.

A very strong case can be made that the West Ham player has been the best player outside of the traditional top six teams. Nevertheless, it still feels as if Bowen is a bit underrated for now.

The attacker contributed to 12 goals and 10 assists in Premier League play last season – only Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-Min, and Harry Kane had more combined goals and assists than Bowen in 2021-22.

In fact, he netted 18 goals and provided 13 assists for the Hammers in all competitions. After being in contention for the previous England squad in March before being ruled out with a fractured foot bone, he thoroughly deserved his call-up for recent Nations League fixtures.
