Inter Milan vs Getafe
Inter Milan and Getafe are about to come head to head in a Europa League Round of 16 tie in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday, and it’s a case of winner takes all.
When the competition was suspended in March, Inter and Getafe hadn’t played their first leg and so this tie is now a single match affair at the neutral ground in Germany. At the time of the break in play the La Liga side was in fine form and relishing the clash, but head coach Jose Bordalas has struggled to get his team going since play resumed and they will start this game as clear underdogs.
Inter are at 1.42 with SBOBET to proceed to the next round, with Getafe out there at 2.85; and the neutral venue and single-leg shootout will probably favour the Italians who have finished the Serie A season strongly.
Talking Points
Close but no cigar for Conte
They finished well but started the season even better, and by the halfway stage Inter were handily in the race to deny Juventus a ninth successive Scudetto. But a New Year stutter left the Nerazzurri trailing and they ended the Serie A season in a battle for second place against Atalanta. They ran out with a 2-0 victory over a side in red-hot form which lifted them to within a point of champions Juventus.
Head coach Antonio Conte must have found that infuriating, describing the match with Atalanta as the ‘best of the losers’! Danilo D’Ambrosio and Ashley Young were on target within the first 20 minutes and Inter shut out their opponents comfortably. But it was a case of what might have been for Conte.
Much of I Nerazzurri’s success was down to the form of new signing Romelu Lukaku. The former Manchester United striker has paid back a considerable chunk of his £80m fee with 29 goals in all competitions. The Belgian was on the score sheet in both legs as Inter beat Ludogorets in the Round of 32, taking his goal tally to 28 in 55 European games.
According to the latest Europa League 2020 betting odds Inter are one of the favourites to lift the trophy and if Lukuku continues his scoring form they will take some stopping. It would be a good end to Conte’s campaign to pick up Inter’s first European title since 2010 when they won the Champions League.
La Liga’s most disappointed
Getafe were so unlucky to miss out on a Europa League or even a Champions League place, as one of the clubs which had its momentum stopped by the outbreak of COVID 19 and postponement of action.
Before the break they were in good shape and in the top four in La Liga but, while some teams benefited from the enforced break, Getafe certainly didn’t and they finished the season with just two points from the last six games. Defeat to Levante on the final day left Getafe in eighth place in the La Liga table, two points behind Granada and without a European spot next season.
So they have to win the Europa League!
Strikers Jaime Mata and Angel Rodriguez could be the men to fire Getafe to success, they have three goals each in the competition, but they come up against a team which has conceded just 36 goals this season, the lowest in Serie A.
History
With 18 Serie A titles and as three times champions of Europe, Inter Milan are football royalty, but they come up against a side with a modest history.
The peak of Getafe’s success came in 2007 and 2008 as Copa del Rey runners up, and they won the Segunda Division in 1999. Bordalas’ team is making their third appearance in Europe and if they make the quarter-finals that will equal the club’s best effort.
The La Liga side had an impressive 3-2 victory over Ajax in the Round of 32, winning the home leg 2-0 before holding the Dutch masters to a 2-1 result back in the Netherlands. Two loanees, Deyverson and Kenedy, were on target in the home tie and could feature again on Wednesday.
Recent form favours the Italians, having won four and drawn two of the last six while Getafe have lost four and drawn two.
In fact, Inter are unbeaten in eight games and I can’t see that sequence ending any time soon.
We’ll be back with the Europa League 2020 news and results as the week goes on but, in the meantime, let’s take a look at the odds and make a pick for this clash.
Betting Tip
Inter Milan vs Getafe | Inter Milan Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 1.94 | |
August 06, 03:00 (GMT+8) |
Inter are clear favourites at 1.70 to win, with the draw at 3.55 and Getafe an outside chance at 4.25.
The break has really worked against Getafe, while Inter have hit peak form in recent weeks, and for an alternative bet, I don’t think a long shot at a scoreline of 2-0 to the Nerazzurri will be too wide of the mark, and that’s available at odds of 6.76.
