The PGA Tour in March ranked the top five golfers from Ireland. Let us take a look at some of them – at least, the ones currently active – and their accomplishments so far, and where they are right now in terms of competition and rankings in the PGA. If you are looking to bet on an Irish golfer for the ongoing US PGA, this could help you decide which golfer to pick.
1. Rory McIlroy
Current status: Number 1 in PGA ranking. 40 days after injuring his ankle in a non-golf related accident, McIlroy returns after much trepidation from the Northern Ireland golfer’s fan base as to whether or not he can defend his US PGA title, especially since he’s already begged off from prior commitments. He finished the first day with a round of 71 and at 24th place along with fellow favourites Jordan Spieth.
2. Graeme McDowell
Rank last week: 60. Rank this week: 61.
Current status: The Portrush man bogeyed the final three holes en route to a one-over-par 73 in the opening round of the US PGA at Whistling Straits. It was not an ideal finish for McDowell after he birdied the 15th.
3. Padraig Harrington
Rank last week: 102. Rank this week: 103.
Current status: The 2008 PGA winner is keen on reclaiming his old title and is still competing, booking a round of 76 after day one in Whistling Straits. Like McIlroy, this Irishman is nursing an injury, hobbled by his bothersome knee. “All I am working on is attitude, no technique at all. I’m just trying to find the right attitude…not to worry about the outcome, trying to be more accepting of missing putts,” said the first Irishman to win multiple majors (2007 and 2008 Open Championship and 2008 PGA Championship).
