Premier League: Familiar Foes Face-Off with New Look

Chelsea vs Liverpool

It’s emerged as a Premier League classic.

SBOBET fans who closely follow the scene will each have their own memories of battles between two, at times, arch-rivals.

That was particularly evident during the Jose Mourinho-Rafa Benitez clashes but the history and rivalry remain.

At a time when one club is in transition, can we still expect Premier League highlights at Stamford Bridge this weekend?

Talking Points

I think the answer is an emphatic yes.

Chelsea may not be the formidable opponent they once were but they can be a threat.

Their current state seems to have been perfectly summed up by their fortunes over the past week.

Their youthful exuberance was at its best when they hit five at Wolves last weekend.

That included a hat-trick from Tabby Abraham who has scored seven of Chelsea’s 11 Premier League goals so far this term

In fact, the average age of Chelsea’s league goalscorers so far has been 21 years and 124 days – the youngest average across the 98 teams in the top five European leagues in 2019/20.

What followed three days later showed why, for all their exciting development, they could struggle against more experienced teams, especially now without the X-Factor that Eden Hazard gave them for so long.

New boss Frank Lampard, who used to love scoring against Liverpool as a player, has been restricted of course by the club’s transfer ban – some say the main factor why he is introducing so many youngsters into the setup.

Yet his commitment to youth is admirable, clearly the way ahead for the club, not simply because of the transfer embargo but because of the raw talent emerging from the academy.

Liverpool, meanwhile, seems to have the perfect balance of youth and experience to end their title drought which stretches back nearly three decades.

This could be a very appealing game for the neutrals to watch, one that is easy on the eye with attacking, almost care-free football at times.

Since the start of the 2000s, this will actually be the 61st meeting between the sides in all competitions, making it the most played fixture between English sides in all competitions in the 21st century.

Very few of those meetings have disappointed neutrals.

History

Last season these sides met three times, each recording a victory and the other ending all square.

On two of those occasions, Chelsea were inspired by Eden Hazard.

In the League Cup at Anfield – a competition they would go onto reach the final of before losing in a penalty shoot-out – the west Londoners trailed 1-0 until the Belgian entered the fray and inspired, scoring a brilliant winner to seal a 2-1 success.

Three days later the sides met again, this time in the league at Stamford Bridge.

Hazard’s excellent finish put the hosts in front until an equally exquisite strike from Daniel Sturridge a minute from time earned Liverpool a point.

It was a very different matter in the return fixture at Anfield in April.

Title-chasing Liverpool were frustrated by their opponents – in the middle of an ultimately successful Europa League campaign – until two goals in three minutes, including a Mo Salah wonder strike, sealed a 2-0 success which almost proved vital in the title race.

Of course, these sides only met a month ago in the European Super Cup Final – an exciting contest which Liverpool edged on penalties.

Overall, Chelsea have 63 victories in all competitions, Liverpool have 79 successes and there have been 41 draws.

Betting Tip

??
Chelsea vs Liverpool Liverpool Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 2.29
September 22, 23:30 (GMT+8)

The Premier League betting odds favour last season’s runners-up and so they should given there is already seven points between them after only five games.

Stamford Bridge has regularly been an unhappy hunting ground for the Merseysiders, however, and those who expect a repeat can back Chelsea 1X2 @ 3.55 – compared to Liverpool 1X2 @ 2.01 – and Asian Handicap Chelsea + 0.25 @ 2.25.

A repeat of last season’s 1-1 draw is available on correct score @ 7.20.

Goals will certainly be expected and that is reflected on fairly low odds of total goal 2-3 @ 2.02, total goal 4-6 @ 2.66 and over 3.25 @ 2.25.

This is a time, though, when one side has genuine experience and the guile the other lacks at times.

Having won one of their first 16 Premier League away games against Chelsea, Liverpool have won five of their last 11 at Stamford Bridge.
